The Classic Maya 2016-10-05

Here's a couple of tech icons - for waterworks and the teotihuacan connection. Have a look and see what you think. I guess the next ones to try would be script and royal inscriptions.
 
just remembered you said that you couldn't find an image of the Mayan calendar. How about this? I'm not sure that it's really mayan but at least it's not as recogniseable as the Aztec sun stone!

Since it looks somewhat primitive, my first thought was to replace the Dom Perdo II's Moche Warrior as the Fighter (first attacker for the Mexicans) with it - the Moche guy doesn't look exactly aggressively Mexican. However, then it occured to me I could use the atlatl guy as the Mexican Ally instead, freeing up the vanilla Jaguar Warrior, which could then replace the AoK Eagle Knight as the Toltec. While this would still leave me with way too many Andean units, I'd be rid of all AoK folks (except for the AoK Aztec Cleric for the Defense unit, which I honestly don't care much about).

Anyone have an opinion or alternate suggestions?
 
Well, I had not finsihed writing my report so two more parts then I go back to finish it (takes a while when writing down everything).

668 Capture Ixlu. Rest them before going to the Calakmul capital. Maybe it is because of playing Civ4 but I have the strong impression our close borders near his capital are what causes our problems. The new Sajals supported by Javelin throwers can take care of most attackers so I can focus on offense. BTW capturing Ixlu eases my treasury (unit support). !!!! Screenshot !!!
Calakmul sign TE with Piedras Negras against me and attacks me. He loses many troops but I have only one defender remaining so...
670 : I sign peace with Calakmul for a symbolic 4g. With a more balanced treasury I send am embassy to Caracol.
Tonina proposes map exchange: ok.

Uaxactun citizens rebel. Of course I want them back !
Caracol, Palenque builds Grand Ball court. But I have now 5 luxuries.
676 : Calakmul apparently delays returning his troops. I demand he leaves but he refuses --> war. I capture 2 workers and kill some Mex Allies in the stacks.
678 : destroy new city, capture 4 workers. Sing MPP with Caracol for WM, 57 g + 2gpt. Instead of worrying for a 2-front war they will come to help me (relief sigh !).
680 : Calendar --> waterworks
Start council house. Caracol declares on Carakmul.
682 : Palenque demands Territory Map + 4g, I accept.
Carakmul kill one of my armies. I make them pay dearly by killing a small stack but it delays my offensive against their capital. Anyway I fall back and hope they send troops to the East against Caracol.
686 : agreement with ex ends, no more incense and obsidian.
692 : Oalenque (city) builds Long Count.
694 : Waterworks --> Royal Inscriptions
new army appears. Trade embargoes against me start to end but Calakmul signs in a new one with the Mex ! No more obsidian for a long time.
AI civs satrt to build Temple of War and Full-figures glyphs.

706 : Royal Inscriptions --> Stela Cult
Copan threatens me (12 g + territory map) I accept. What a coward I am ! But I am in the center so...
714 : Calakmul is apparently well-defended. Kill a few troops and propose peace to heal my armies (palace defenses ARE strong). I get 2 workers, 20g + 16 gpt. The war will restart soon enough.
Embassy to Palenque.
716 : because of MPP war again vs Calakmul. Man that was quick !
718 : end of MPP
726 : Piedras Negras has a large group of warriors closing in on Machaquila. I give them precious feathers for free. This is my linl to some vital luxuries so I cannot afford a war there now.
728 : Piedras Negras warriors... pass by ! On the other hand I relaize they have setteled between my 2 "branches" towards the SW. Hope I can convert them. Kill 1 Sajal in capital (was mostly keeping guard and letting Caracol do active war) but stops there since I almost lost an army.
730 : Stela Cult --> Militarism
Calakmul city builds Grand Ballcourt --> Copanec builds Temple of War.
Mexicans build full-featured Glyphs...
736 : Trade Stela Cult around which grants me a mot of money + some gpt, militarism and WP. I research Warrior Cult. Too bad I don't alwyas think of trading techs around. !!! Screenshot !!!

Nice report.

I believe you're quite right about the proximity to Calakmul's capital. In any case, Calakmul hates Tikal with passion, which is as it should be.

Looking at your minimap, Toniná and Palenque seems to be doing well.

Something that does surprise me is that Palenque never seems to capture Xicalango. I mean, it's not like the Mexicans can really defend it.

Calakmul building the Grand Ballcourt could turn out to be a pain in the neck - that's +25% production everywhere for them!

Once you research Warrior Cult, you should find going on the offensive much easier. In fact, attacking in the JT/Sajal era is so tough I've been considering doing something about it. I don't know what tho - simply upping the JT to 4.2.1 would probably make beelining for Blood Cult too powerful. Maybe Sajals should be moved to a later tech, so that the "deadlock" doesn't last so long.
 
Those will do fine, thanks. :goodjob: Only concern is that the Script one might look to much like the Stoneworking one - I'll have to look how it looks in-game.

Edit: The colours on the Script and Stoneworking icons are different enough I think it's no problem.
 
Well let me know if you decide different. I don't mind finding an alternative. More will follow but I'll need to discuss the source material with you in more detail.
 
738 : End embrago Mex + Calakmul vs me. Calakmul immadietely sign Palenque instead... and nobody wants to ally or sign TE against them.
740 : Calakmul apparently targets el Peru again but my armies love his stacks. Hit, run, hit, run...
742 : Kill 4 Javeline Throwers but still some threat on el Peru.
In his turn, they divert. Probably did not like my Sajal reinforcements...

I try to fix the battles around Ixlu as I don't have that many troops and cannot spread them so I leave Ixlu with little defense but with strong troops nearby.
744 : plant a spy in Caracol. Man they are stronger (cf screenshot)
Copan and Calakmul sign TE vs me (sigh !)
746 : Palenque is really advanced and they are not interested in MPP or military alliance vs Carakmul but they start to cross my borders (apparently they want to settle north of Carakmul).. Constant (and pretty useless) war is killing me.
Eventually Piedras Negras accept to sign an MPP (for WP, 15gpt and 50 gold). I have to modify the slider.
In their turn : Palenque declares on Piedras Negras. My gpt dives to -17 gpt !
A temple is sold automatically...
At least Piedras Negras declare on Calakmul...
748 : science goes down to 60% which gives a positive cashflow. Lose army attacking a simple javelin thrower (not for lack of practice though) AND I spot the first Calakmul Ajwa (man, this is becoming though).
750 : Warrior cult --> fortifications (to get a stronger defender, the guardian)
Kill 2 Palenque Sajal + 1 warrior that wander in my territory East of Ixlu. Cleaning them all will take both time and manpower. Bust most cities nwo have reservoirs and are building barracks.
And Piedras Negras has lots of outdated warriors that go north in my territory and that can help (or at least keep my ennemies busy).
752 - 754 : Lots of skirmishes around Ixlu. Palenque trespassers all killed but one. None did any pillaging ???
Copan allies with Palenque vs me (sigh !)

756 : Ajwa kills last Palenque Sajal in my territory = less worries + GA !
758 : finish off troops around Ixlu but now 6 Calakmul Ajwas threaten Uaxactun. Move army there kill 1 ajaw and propose peace --> accepted (Calakmul is broken but won't part from its three techs in advance so I just take WP which shows Palenque is settling north of Calakmul. Caracol JT kills 2 ajaws (attack then defense) so altogether Uaxactun is saved.
Calakmul + Copan TE vs me....
762 : fortifications --> Total War
4 Calakmul ajaws cross towards Piedras Negras near Ixlu while his other troops went back to his territory. I ask them to leave and of course they declare on me :-( I kill 3 army but my army got really weak (1HP) after killing one ajaw only and is open for counter-attack. In the West I send 4 ajaws to attack Palenque's New Jolja (isolated between Piedras Negras and me) but...
764 : Copan declares on Piedras Negras
Calakmul kills my remaining army...
... and Piedras Negras capture New Jolja while I am on my way.
768 Swift attacks against Ajaw stacks. Moved defenders out of Uaxactun and it works. Calakmul troops diverted from Ixlu in 766 and turn to Uaxactun in 766.
770 : Caracol and Calakmul sign peace treaty.
772 : New troops apporach Ixlu for the nth siege of the city (cf screenshot). He means business !
