A blast from the past. :)

1) What military organization which figured significantly in the Cold War was disbanded in 1992 in a reorganization of the U.S. Department of Defence?

2) Who was primarily responsible for the development of the hydrogen bomb?

3) Which incident resulted in the worst loss of U.S. navy personnel from hostile action since World War 2?

4) This U.S. submarine, lost in 1968, may have been betrayed by John Walker.

5) Which countries attempts at reform were quickly followed by an invasion by troops from East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, and the Soviet Union?

6) This 12 day upheaval began when universitry students demonstrated their support for the Polish election of a new communist leader not supported by the Soviets.

7) This infamous fighter was developed as an answer to the American B-71 Valkyrie program.

8) This program was the predominant reason the Soviets began the blockade of Berlin in 1948.

9) The ratificaton of this treaty was delayed (permanently, as it turned out) due to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

10) In what year was the first missile with a MIRV delivery system deployed?

More later, if these go quickly. :)

"5) Which countries attempts at reform were quickly followed by an invasion by troops from East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, and the Soviet Union?"

Czechoslovakia. Hungary too earlier.

"8) This program was the predominant reason the Soviets began the blockade of Berlin in 1948."

The Marshall Plan?

"9) The ratificaton of this treaty was delayed (permanently, as it turned out) due to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan."

#5 is correct.
#8 The Marshall Plan was a factor, but not the predominant one.
#9 Well, it's not START, but it has a II in it. :)

10.)Minuteman III?
9.) SALT II. The end of detente.
8.)The unification of the occupied zones of USA, Britain and France, and the introduction of a standard currency
7.)Mig-25. First all steel fighter, I believe
6.) Something to do with Gomulka in 56?
5.) Czechoslovakia, 1968. The Brezhnev Doctrine kicks in.
4.) USS Scorpion
3.) The USS Liberty in 1967, 34 men died under Israeli attack? (US Navy personnel, but NSA ship)
2.)Ernest Lawrence and/or Edward Teller?
1.) SAC. Strategic Air Command combined with Tactical Air Command to form Air Combat Command.

The man is good. :)

#2: I was looking for Edward Teller.
#4: Originally the loss of the Scorpion was reported to be an accident. The story was she accidently fired and was sunk by one of her own torpedoes. There have been recent stories that she was betrayed by Walker and sunk by the Soviets while on an intelligence gathering mission.
#6: Close enough. Hungary uprising.
#8: Also called the London Program.
#10: According to my sources the first MIRV'ed Minuteman III was deployed in 1970.

Good work. :)

I have to assume the SAC/Strategic Air Command.

2) Who was primarily responsible for the development of the hydrogen bomb?

The unrepentent Hungarian-American Edward Teller.

3) Which incident resulted in the worst loss of U.S. navy personnel from hostile action since World War 2?

?

4) This U.S. submarine, lost in 1968, may have been betrayed by John Walker.

?

5) Which countries attempts at reform were quickly followed by an invasion by troops from East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, and the Soviet Union?

? There's only been one Warsaw Pact invasion of a member state, Czechoslovakia in August 1968. Perhaps you're considering the two, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, as the separate states they are today? The Hungarian Revolution of October-November 1956 was crushed exclusively by Soviet troops. Poland in 1981 was threatened by a Pact invasion, but it never materialized and many debate how serious the threat really was...

6) This 12 day upheaval began when universitry students demonstrated their support for the Polish election of a new communist leader not supported by the Soviets.

Wiosna ludu! The "Polish Spring in October". Wladyslaw Gomulka was rehabilitated and elected by the Polish politburo to First Secretary in October 1956 without Soviet approval, and on the night of 21-22 October Khrushchov showed up in Warsaw while the Soviet Army moved on the major cities. Citizens were armed, and the Polish Army refused orders to aid the Soviets and began to block off Warsaw. Khrushchov backed down, and Poland became the first Pact state to escape Soviet micro-management. However, Gomulka proved to be a good Soviet lap dog anyway, as ironically he would order the Polish Army to invade Czechoslovakia 12 years later, and he would be overthrown after food riots led to street clashes in 1970.

7) This infamous fighter was developed as an answer to the American B-71 Valkyrie program.

Mig-25

8) This program was the predominant reason the Soviets began the blockade of Berlin in 1948.

Marshall Plan and the formation of NATO.

9) The ratificaton of this treaty was delayed (permanently, as it turned out) due to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

SALT II

10) In what year was the first missile with a MIRV delivery system deployed?

1985?

Yes, I meant 1970 in regards to Minuteman III. I knew 1956 was something to do with Gomulka, and Hungary as well, but details evaded one's grasp.

And Vrylakas, I believe the confusion you are experiencing is because of an unintentional pluralization in the question.

Bring on round #2!:D

Vrylakas

#5 Sorry about that. The question should read "Country's", not "Countries". I can see how that would be confusing now. Anyway, you're correct, it was Czechoslovakia.

#6 Actually, the Hungarian uprising started with university students demonstrations supporting the Polish elections.

#8) While the Marshall Plan certainly pissed the Soviets off, it was the decision to combine the separate occupation zones into a single zone and introduce new currency which really triggered the blockade.

No probs - my own typing is atrocious, and my posts are riddled with typos.

Ah, I didn't understand from the question that you meant in another country. Yes, after the intense Gomulka-Khrushchov negotiations from 21-22. October, the Hungarians rallied around a statue of Jozef Bem (the Polish general who led Hungarian rebel armies in Transylvania during the 1848-49 Hungarian Revolution) in Budapest, which became one of the flash-points for the start of the '56 Revolution.

Good quiz Dingbat/bruce!
