What has the civilization games done for you?

I have played all three civ installments for the better part of a decade now but can’t help wondering how much time I have spent playing the game – how often have I sacrificed long term benefits, such as an education and cultivating friendships, for the sake of short term pleasures such as clubbing a rival civ into submission ;) or anticipating the benefits of the wonder that is almost, almost finished...and you're sure you'll get it before any other civ :crazyeye: ...

So, do you feel that playing the game has fundamentally improved your gaming experience and enriched your life by challenging you in multiple ways…

or

Has civ taken on a kind of Jeckyl and Hyde character: On the one hand its enjoyable to play and all that, but on the other its a curse not letting you off the hook and willing you to play one more turn, and then one more until you lose all track of time and wonder what the hell you’re actually getting yourself into.

or is it somewhere in between?

Hard to answer. I love the game and can spend hours upon hours playing. Good think for me is that I can organize my priorities and do manage to hold down my job, spend time with my wife and kid, do much needed stuff around the house, and have a social life outside of work-family-civ.

Now, the days when I am working at home and the little seal pup is at daycare, I may spend a few more hours playing than I should.

Great! Sounds like you got your priorities sorted :goodjob:
I'm still working on that one :(

I play Civ whenever I feel the need to conquer the world...otherwise it says in its case.

How often do I feel the need to conquer the world...well I'll leave that up for you to guess. :)

For me, personally, I swing between playing too much, and not playing at all. No real middle-ground to speak of.

I have to fight for computer time to play it anyway... a part time job.. semi-stay home dad.. househusband at times and I coach youth baseball in the Spring and I am a hockey Dad who'se son, a goalie, plays 50 games a season in various parts of the state.. not to mention twice as many practices in the fall and winter and I still find I can "squeeze" in an hour a day, on average.. Besides, sleep is overrated, esepcially when you're knocking on Persopolis' doorstep at 1AM

To be honest I think I have to say it's Jekyll & Hide :mischief:
Civ is without any doubt the best computer-game that I have ever played and it's fanatstic that you can play it with great enthusiasm even after more than ten years.:top:
One the other hand there are too many hours that would have better invested in sleeping. :(

I play it occasionaly. I'm not in a least bit addicted to it, but it is the game that has managed to keep my attention the longest (which is contributed more to these forums than the game itself).

A working, married man cannot play these games too much. I enjoy modding C3C and frequenting this forum, and occasionally I also play, but I still had to reply that I play when I have a respite from my otherwise busy schedule. Still, I earn amused glances from my wife when I start to explain something Civ related to her with no stop in sight.

Well, she plays the game too, sometimes, so I trust that I'm not alienating her... :)

Me too. I play civ when I can. 'Cept I don't have a social life. Unless you count CFC. :mischief:

I am in law school, and I have a girlfriend--there is not much time to do things like play Civ. But that does not mean that I do not spend at least a bit of time every week playing this wonderful game...at times during class. :mischief:

not much time to play due to my busy schedule, but i manage to play it occasionally, because it is such a fine game... and this includes SMAC too, mind you. :)

voted "play occasionally' ... thank god, i can say that now! I left 'addiction/affliction' behind. How I manged that: I decided to play one quality game a month, the 'Game of the Month', sometimes submitting, sometimes not. That depends on my real life schedule. No endless epic games on huge maps anymore where i will win, anyway.

But I am on cfc on a daily basis, that takes time, too .......
