Was there this much backlash for previous Civ games?

Review bombing on Steam is just the new normal in gaming in my humble opinion.

Okay let me stop you here. this simply isn't true. There are still tons of quality games released even today to positive reviews and receptions on steam including some released within weeks of Civilization VII like Marvel Rivals, Kingdom Come II and Path of Exile 2... none of these titles released to Mixed reception... Why? I'll let everyone here come to their own conclusions

Trying to pin this all on steam community doesn't make any sense when the review scores are just as bad on metacritic, playstation and Xbox stores.... and the argument that everyone is just too negative and there is some sort of conspiracy to "review bomb" the game doesn't work when there are games released to overwhelmingly positive acclaim.

It is true, see I said "in my humble opinion". So, let me stop you right there. Read more closely.

You're also cherry picking some of the top games of the year. I haven't played any of them, but Rivals and Kingdom Come 2 are likely legit GOTY contenders early.

In my humble opinion, your opinion is wrong

also I'm not "cherrypicking" I'm pointing out the major flaw in your objectively incorrect opinion Moderator Action: Warned for trolling. The_J . These games are not outliers, they're just good and what fans who bought them wanted, which is why they released to a postivie reception. Even Avowed, which flopped, has mostly positive reviews.

Out of Steams top ten sellers currently, only 3 have mixed reviews.... so how on earth can you come to the conclusion that "review bombing is the new norm" and "all games start out with mixed scores" if thats the case?

Just about every game on Steam starts out mixed.
That's just plain not true. And even if it were true, the reviews would tend towards a more realistic picture over time, which Civ VII shows no sign of doing. It's hovered around 50% since release. DRM and pricing are very valid criticisms to raise in reviews.

There's an old Steam joke about the player "Played Game X 2000 hours" and the review reads, "Worst game I ever bought".
These must make up, what, 0.01% of reviews total?

You can't just state a blatant falsehood, say 'that's just like, my opinion, man' and ignore any further discussion. Liechtenstein is the biggest country in the world. In my humble opinion.

Quite frankly, the amount of drama and rage is downright comical at times The older I get, the more I realize that time is the most valuable resource. If you aren't enjoying your spare time, make a change and find something to maximize your fun in those few spare hours we get.
Yeah, it really boggles the mind seeing how much time and energy people put into continuously slamming the same piece of media and getting into arguments with people who don't agree with them.

One hypothesis is that this is what they enjoy doing. Instead of playing a game or watching something or not doing so and moving on, they enjoy complaining about it. Kinda warped, but I guess people need their entertainment and this is just one form of it today.

I could tell for myself, I'm just having a depression episode now and anxiety limits access to other forms of spending time. Wouldn't participate in such discussion with more calm state of mind, of course.

Funny that you don’t see that this projection could also apply to you in the inverse. Why do you put so much energy into defending the game? Shouldn’t you be playing and enjoying it instead of valiantly defending it on a public discussion forum? Why did you enter a topic discussion playercounts or negative backlash? Are you getting enjoyment out of this?

I think it was spoken about both sides (actually there are more than 2, because those discussions are not only about defending/attacking the game).

It's pretty funny that one of the two people I can count to reply disagreeing pretty much any time I leave a comment is saying that it boggles the mind that people with warped minds don't have anything better to do than reply disagreeing to people all day.

Eh, it's hard to tell posters apart who don't have an avatar. Rest assured that I don't recall your generic user name in particular.

I don't think so. I think it's more that people are a complex mess of habits and wants and impulses and often end up doing things they enjoy less than what they want to be doing because of one reason or another. Whether that's a need to respond to someone that they think is wrong, an inability to ignore notifications that pop up, the feeling that their point is being 'attacked', or one of a multitude of other things.

(and just to be clear: this absolutely applies to me as well here and there)

We're stepping on thin ice of going personal, but I could say that there are people with 10K+ posts on this forum, most of which are constructive discussion of various game elements, helping others, etc. And there are other people with much less number of posts, 100% of which are participation in heated discussions.

And there definitely seem to be a bunch of people in that latter group who, as far as I can tell, seem to visit the forums exclusively to complain about the game everywhere they can (while not even having played it).

Why are you guys surprised that civ fans that don’t like the direction the series has taken are also posting on a public civ related discussion forum?

Again whats happening is not some conspiracy

Civ fans are often on the forum for some time and have some posts about previous games. People who register exclusively to complain about Civ7, could be named "fans" only with some reservations.

Sure, the situations could differ for different people.

There are people who claim to have played since Civ1 or 2 who have relatively new join dates. TBF, they could just not have been posting on CFC or they might have lost their old account details.

Regardless, it follows the trend of people having become more active in voicing their displeasure online in recent years. They may do that once or twice, and that's enough to create a backlash. The persistent ones who (at least somewhat) enjoy voicing their displeasure are a vocal minority. Whether or not they are fans, well... I think common wisdom today is that there's no worse audience for a piece of media than its fans.

This isn’t my first account. I was here back during IV and was around the for the launches of V and VI largely lurking. I just don’t remember my old log in information

but even my specific situation aside, it’s quite laughable to try and no true Scotsman being a civilization fan. The entire civilization fandom isn’t posting on civ fanatics and even those who only created an account to express disappoint are absolutely still fans if they owned and enjoyed previous titles

Suggesting value of fan based on their post count feels like low blow. As I understand those people with 10k+ post never registered as newbies to complain about civ3? They were born with 10k+ posts? I guess people, who were to young to be here in civ3 glory days are not worthy of posting amongst true fans.

And on another note - people complaining are people still caring. If they stop caring, there will be 100% positive feedback (bubble).

It wasn't personal attack about you, as I wrote there are different situations. But there are some other people as well.

When I speak about fans of the franchise, we mean people who actively played previous games. Also, the majority of them are likely participated in some online communities (like you), and there are 2 biggest - this one and reddit (although people coming from non-English communities could be a big thing as well). So, when I see an account created recently with 100% of posts being hate about Civ7, I by default question the status of the fan, meaning I'm not sure they really liked previous games and played them a lot.
