History Buff, I'm tempted to ask how old you are, if only because I remember my mother complaining about this when I was 10 - which happened to be when Joe Clark was elected PM with fewer votes (but more seats) than Trudeau in 1979. Glen Clark also pulled it off in 1996 in BC or whenever it was as well. It's a common problem, and westerners like yourself (and formerly myself) have been *****ing quite rightly about the pointlessness of voting in a stacked system for years.
Our American readers might be interested to know that we set up a new system here in Canada to count all the votes at the same time, despite time zone differences, so that westerners wouldn't drive home from work to listen to the radio telling them that the election had already been decided before the polls closed at the Manitoba border.
