The Gaia War

The Omega said:
You're just jealous that your power level isn't that high.

Yeah... According to the PowerGraph in my AoI game, my power's only OVER 3000! :p

Seriously, though... Why don't you just call Pwnzoria "AOL City"... To quote certain treatise on if a highway were REALLY like the internet:

There it is again. Some clueless fool talking about the "Information Superhighway". They don't know didley about the Net. It's nothing like a superhighway. That's a rotten metaphor.

Suppose the metaphor ran in the other direction. Suppose the highways were like the net...

A highway hundreds of lanes wide. Most with pitfalls for potholes. Privately operated bridges and overpasses. No highway patrol. A couple of rent-a-cops on bicycles with broken whistles. 500 member vigilante posses with nuclear weapons. A minimum of 237 on ramps at every intersection.

No signs. Wanna get to Ensenada? Holler out the window at a passing truck to ask directions.

Ad hoc traffic laws. Some lanes would vote to make use by a single-occupant-vehicle a capital offense on Monday through Friday between 7:00 and 9:00. Other lanes would just shoot you without a trial for talking on a car phone.

AOL would be a giant diesel-smoking bus with hundreds of ebola victims on board throwing dead wombats and rotten cabbage at the other cars, most of which have been assembled at home from kits. Some are built around 2.5 horsepower lawn mower engines with a top speed of nine miles an hour. Others burn nitroglycerin and idle at 120.

No license plates. World War II bomber nose art instead. Terrifying paintings of huge teeth or vampire eagles. Bumper mounted machine guns. Flip somebody the finger on this highway and get a white phosphorus grenade up your tailpipe. Flatbed trucks cruise around with anti-aircraft missile batteries to shoot down the traffic helicopter. Little kids on tricycles with squirt guns filled with hydrochloric acid switch lanes without warning.

NO OFFRAMPS. None.

Now that's the way to run an Interstate Highway system.

Or as Blair Houghton put it: "Come to think of it, there are already a million monkeys on a million typewriters, and Usenet is nothing like Shakespeare."

....THAT is my main beef with Pwnzoria. :p

We need to capture those cities before they have a chance to replenish their losses. Besides, we can't let Hikaro get all the city capturing glory on the Stories & Tales forum."
Peter's brow furrowed in confusion. "Sir?"

"....which brings us to today's top story, the War with Erebia. After weeks of intense fighting in the Fort Tallen area, the Erebian army is in full retreat. Following the counterattack which drove the Erebians from the Liberty Line, our brave soldiers have continued their attack, driving the Erebians back to Tannhauser. Fighting remains fierce, but despite experiencing thousands of casualties in their futile charges, Erebia shows no signs of surrendering soon. President Kari was quoted saying, 'Thanks to the determination and bravery of our soldiers, we will drive the Triumvirate back, until the entire Erebian Peninsula has been freed. We will accept nothing less than an unconditional surrender, and an end to the brutal governments that oppress their people.' In a related story,...."

Schripia City, Schripia

There was an air of dread to the room. Men in very expensive suits sat around a table, nervously glancing at each other, hoping that they would find some trace of confidence in another face to bring them hope. None found any.
Smithy found himself having to suppress a sigh of despair. This was what was left of the leadership of Schripia. The smarter investors had pulled out as soon as it became clear that war was coming. What he had been left with was the overconfident, the naive, and the fools. Well, that wasn't entirely fair. A few had stayed out of dedication to their tiny island nation/corporation/thing, but not enough to effectively fight back against what they were facing.
"Gentlemen," Smithy began, smiling to hide his feelings underneath. "I won't mince words with you; the situation is indeed very bleak. Yesterday, Omegian forces under the command of General Peter captured the city of Rii, leaving our Arigosian allies with only their capital and the few soldiers they have at the Impact Site. At the rate at which their army is advancing, it won't be long until we stand alone against them."
"What about the Iustitians?"
There was obvious desperation in the speaker's voice. It was almost pitiable, Smithy thought.
"The Iustitians are currently engaged with the Erebians. They would have to fight through quite a lot of land before they even reached the border of Omegia. As such, we are focusing our attention on the defense of our current holdings. I have already formed a field army to assist in holding the city, and have ordered funds to be shifted from rebuilding our navy to strengthening our current defenses. While such actions would normally required the board's approval, I predicted your support, and already sent out the orders. If I in fact misjudged your support, the board need only state as such, and I assure you that the mistakes will be rectified in as short a time period as is possible, given the current situation. Now then, I have drafted up a short folder detailing the specifics of these new defensive measures, which you will find on the table in front of you...."
Smithy smiled again, and this time it was genuine, as the men began to look through the folders he had given them. Just a hint of fear, and all opposition amongst them was gone. At last he could end those stupid invasions, and begin focusing on more important tasks.
He felt the glowing Gaia Stone from inside his pocket. Yes.... More study would have to be done for these. It was vital that he learn more about them....

Hey, Omega, if for some reason you need ideas for names for Pwnzoria's generic unit lines, This Awesome Video is a good place to start (I particularly like the OMFGbombz0rs and the TTYLnukes as well as the AFK-47's ;) )

Don't worry, people. I'm still alive. I've just been distracted. By lots of things. All of which endeavored to make me focus on non-civ3 things. But I've gotten rid of most of those (At least, the less amusing ones....:mischief:), so I should hopefully be back to updating this.
And so, without further ado!

Part X
Not One Step Back

April 23, 2013
Bhyu Parliament, Albinthene, Bhyu

The debate within the building had been raging for days now. Well, raging may not have been the best choice of words. Even in a time of war, the Bhyu kept their serious and somber manner. Had one not payed any mind to the actual words being said, it would appears as little more than another particularly divisive act. But underneath the calm and politeness, Prime Minister Yamato could feel the tension, bordering at the breaking point. Up until now, Bhyu had done little more than stand on the sidelines of the war, providing nothing more than air support, and the occasional infantry division. But with the reports of Iustitia's success on the field, there had been a growing voice amongst the populace to increase Bhyu's participation in this war. Now the decision had come down to this final vote. It took all of Yamato's will to stay silent as the fate of his nation was decided. He had already given his speeches, spoken his side of the debate, and tried to gather up support for increased participation in the war. But now the final decision would be made by other men.
The votes were cast, then quickly tallied. The act barely gained the 3/4s majority it needed to pass. Yamato finally let himself breath again, though there was one final obstacle before the armies could march forth.
The paper was then brought to the front of the room, where the king sat. In theory, he had the power to veto any bill passed by the Bhyu Parliament, though no king had exercised this power in centuries. Even so, Yamato couldn't help but worry as the king glanced over the paper. Then, with a few quick strokes, his name was signed. It had been made official. A field army of Bhyu tanks, as well as 5 additional tank divisions and 2 infantry divisions, would be sent to the frontlines.

Minor Impact Site, Outskirts of Austin, Omegia

The hill really made a nice view of the surrounding area. From the top, you could see green, rolling fields going off in every direction. Emperor Sean had been slightly surprised to find such a place so close to the capital. He had assumed that most locales of this nature had all been taken and heavily developed in Omegia's constant quest for greater industrial might.
It was a shame, then, that the same fate would have to befall this area. From the hilltop, Sean could see the dark scar in the land where the meteorite fragment collided with the ground. Around it, workers were quickly building large and industrial looking buildings and machinery. Up until this point, researcher studying Gaia had relied on getting the smaller fragments that could be collected off the ground. The larger pieces, which had embedded themselves into the ground, had required too much energy to be feasible. But now, based off of the same high powered laser technology that was being implemented in Omegia's new artillery, a more efficient way of recovering the meteorites had been found.
Sean's hand clutched the Gaia stone he had taken to wearing around his neck. Peter's forces had already landed by the Arigosian's research center. Soon, he would control the largest source of Gaia in the world....

No-Man's Land

The Bhyu forces sent to the frontlines had gone there with high hopes for their success. After all, the Iustitians were driving back the increasingly desperate Erebians with minimal casualties. They were already almost at the Tannhauser Gate, and it looked like the war would be ended soon. The Bhyu soldiers expected they would see only a brief glimpse of the fighting before the whole thing was won.
Things went bad as soon as they crossed into No-Man's land. Omegian bombers dropped hundreds of bombs on the advancing soldiers. Helicopters struck the army in quick hit and run attacks, destroying moral and organization. By the time the tanks had reached the edges of the Tannhauser Gate line, over 50% had been destroyed.
The final blow came in the form of Omegia's new laser artillery guns. The Bhyu, despite their reputations for their technological prowess, had never faced any weapon like it before. The lasers tore through their tanks, destroying hundreds before they even got a chance to fire a single shot. When the Omegian ground troops came in, they faced little resistance from what was left of the glorious Bhyu army.

Tannhauser Gate Defensive Line, Erebia

sovietdefense.jpg

Attacking the Iustitian's defenses had seemed like the end of the world to Bee. Now, the Iustitian's attacking their defensive lines felt like the apocalypse was coming again. For weeks now, the Iustitians had been driving them back. Dozens of failed counterattacks had left the road covered in Erebian dead. They were now making their final stand at the Tannhauser Gate. If they couldn't defeat the Iustitians here, the city of Tannhauser would be open to attack, and its fall, all of Erebia would be open to attack.
Bee desperately fired off at the advancing enemies. He had lost count of how many bullets he had shot here. It was never enough. More and more tanks and soldiers came in, overwhelming the tired defenders. If things continued at this rate, the line would break, no matter how much the cultists roared for not a single step to be taken backwards.
Bee pulled the trigger again, but instead of a gunshot, the only sound that came was a forlorn clicking noise. Out of ammo. He searched through the pockets of the nearby corpses, but he had exhausted that resource earlier.
A large shadow fell over Bee, seeming to completely block out the sun. Looking up, he saw in the sky hundreds of black bombers, with a golden omega on the wings. The bombers released their load, creating a wall of fire around the Iustitians.
When the explosions finally stopped, the surviving Iustitians were falling back. Bee leaned against what was left of the wall of a destroyed bunker, panting for breath. Around him, the pockets of Erebian survivors came out of their cover to watch the retreat. Out of the thousands that had marched out, only a few hundred were still alive.
Another glorious victory for Erebia, Bee muttered bitterly to himself.

I take it that the Erebians are set up to use the "Zergling" option in this scenario.....

Rather anticlimactic way to end this story, buuuut..... I was cleaning out my folders, and I accidentally deleted the save game for this story.:cringe:
And just when I was starting to write for it again...:(

Oh no. :( It happened to me too when I was writing 'The Story of Africa'. But I wasn't cleaning my folders. My computer decided to clean all save files by crashing. But great story you had here! :goodjob:

Part XI
We're Back, Baby

May 5, 2013
Omegian Imperial Palace, Omegia

".... Whoa."
Emperor Sean sat at his desk, slightly confused. What... What had just happened? He pressed a button to call General Peter.
It took a few moments for the call to go through, but Peter's face soon appeared on the giant villain-esque television screen Sean had installed in his office.

"Yes, my lord?" Peter asked, looking slightly disorientated.
"Hey, Peter.... Does it feel to you like our world was suddenly ended, and then five months later came back but in a slightly different form?"
"Well.... Yes, that is exactly what I feel like. Weird."

Sean shook his head. It just felt odd. But he needed to focus on the matters at hand.
"So, are your forces prepared to launch the attack on the Arigosian's research facilities?"
Peter hesitated. "Actually.... Sir, we seem to have found ourselves outside the city of Rii. Which is somehow still held by the Arigosians."
"But.... But didn't we take that city already?"
"I thought we had.... But it seems that this playthrough, the RNG didn't give us a second Army, and the Schripians sank most of our transportation fleet, so we weren't able to blitz as effectively as before."
".... Peter, you do understand that sentence made absolutely no sense at all."
"I know sir. I don't know what came over me." Peter looked down, and then back up towards the screen. "Um... According to these reports I seem to have in front of me, the Chrians have also captured Lollerskate Town."
"What? When?"
"Last week, apparently."
Sean rubbed his temples. Chrians? Invading Pwnzoria? When had that happened? "What else has changed?"
"Well, our ground forces are about the same size as before, except they're stuck on the mainland, because most of our transportation fleet has vanished. We have more tanks than before, but less artillery. Our air force is also smaller; it seems as though we also took more casualties this time around. On the bright side, our infrastructure is slightly better, with two more worker groups and a few more research labs."

A long silence filled the room. Sean coughed, and then spoke hesitantly. "You know what.... Let's just pretend absolutely nothing happened, okay? Just play along. I'll have our navy and air force rebuilt to what it was before, and we'll take back Lollerskate Town for Pwnzoria. Then we can capture Rii, and everything will be as it should."
"Yes sir."

werebackm.jpg

That's right, ladies and gents, I've gotten back to work on this scenario (as well as working on the Playground Mod). So to celebrate my return to productivity, I've restarted this story. The game has been played up to the turn I left off at when I lost my savegame. While there are some differences (outlined above), I tried to make everything as close to how it had been on the first playthrough.

So yeah. You are free to celebrate and rejoice.:D

Nice to see this story come back... BTW, is that.... MATERIA on the island in the middle of that crater?!?!

Well, if Gaia is magical rocks that let you do Cool Stuff tm, then they wouldn't be that different at all. :p

Also, at "Lollerskate Town".... It seems you decided to implement a few of my suggestions for Pwnzoria's city and unit lists. :D

Part XII
Fixing Things

May 6, 2013
Omegian Military Command, Austin, Omegia

The previous 24 hours had been very frantic ones for Peter. Suddenly finding your entire army in a completely different position than before, and significantly weaker (OCC Note: Do not try playing your first game on a difficultly level higher than you're used to after months of not even touching civ3). Things had become very rushed. Emperor Sean had quickly recalled him to Austin so he could actually make use of all the fancy communications technology they'd been stocking up for years and coordinate armies on multiple fronts.

Retaking Lollserskate Town had been the easiest job. Only two Chrian divisions had actually landed at the town; according to the prisoners they had interrogated, it was not meant to be a full scale invasion, but instead had only been meant to cause large amounts of damage and kill many heretics. Capturing the city had been a move made by the on field commander's initiative, after he had realized how weakly defended Pwnzoria was leaving its homeland. The 8 divisions Peter had sent to retake the city had been overkill, and after a few waves of Erebian troops had softened the defenses, the Omegians swooped in and wiped out any resistance. The Chrians had tried to fight hard, but had been unable to keep up with the speed which the Omegians attacked with.

Taking Rii had been slightly more difficult. Peter distinctly remembered taking the city before, with great ease, but this time they seemed to lack the luck they had before. Their already small air force seemed determined to shrink even further, as less and less bombers came back after each run. And without the fleet of transport ships they once had, the three divisions of laser artillery were forced to stay behind to make room for combat troops. Still, it wasn't all bad. The Omegian navy had performed admirably, heavily bombarding enemy troop positions before the landing, and as soon as the ground troops had reached the city, resistance crumbled. Most Arigosian soldiers surrendered quickly, and there were few signs of resistance from the citizenry. All in all, it could have been worse.

May 28, 2013
Arigosian Research Center, Main Impact Site

"DESU DESU DESU DESU!!!"
Even away from the front lines, General Pwnstein could still hear the shouts of Pwnzorian soldiers as they charged at the Arigosians. They'd been at it all day now, with the bodies and burnt out tanks to prove it. The lack of success was slightly worrying to Pwnstein. Sure, running headlong at the enemy was the most honorable way to fight, and there was no way he would ever suggest that his soldiers use cover like n00b campers, but at times he wondered if those n00b campers had the right idea.

Not that the attack was going badly; on the contrary, two Arigosian divisions had already been destroyed, and it looked like another would be gone soon. It's just that he wasn't sure how long they could keep up this attack, with casualties mounting as quickly as they were.

An aide was running towards him holding a phone. "Call from General Peter, sir!"
Finally, Pwnstein muttered. Omegia had been promising them support from the start of the attack, yet they had seen none thus far. "Yes?" He spoke gruffly into the phone.
"Cease all further attacks on the research center until Omegian troops arrive." Peter coldly said.
"Wh-what?" Pwnstein felt anger rising in him. Who did this man think he was, to just order him around like that? He had no authority over the Pwnzorian army! "We've been fighting for this place for the good part of a day now, and are about the capture it! I'm not going to stop now, just when our troops are almost victorious!"
"According to the agreement between our two leaders, everything around the Gaia crater is the territory of Omegia."
"Right, I'll hand this place over to you just as soon as you give us Rii and Ashtyre! Or did you forget your side's part of this bargain?"
There was a silence from the other end of the phone, long enough for Pwnstein to begin hoping that he might have actually won this argument. But then Peter's voice came back, this time with an air of military superiority, as if he were talking with some low ranking soldier. "I have been asked to inform you that if you do not cease your attacks further into the research center, a state of war will exist between Omegia and Pwnzoria. You may continue your tank operations outside the facility, and will be given support by our tank divisions that will be arriving soon, but only our black ops are to be permitted to go further into the center. If your soldiers do not hold their positions and move further inside, our black ops will consider them to be targets along with any Arigosian soldiers they encounter. Am I making myself clear?"
This time Pwnstein was the one silent. What were the Omegians thinking? That Peter had said he had "been told" implied that his orders had come from Emperor Sean. Was that man really crazy enough to start a war over a few miles of glowing rock?
No, the question Pwnstein had to ask himself was, was he himself crazy enough to start a war over a few miles of glowing rock? His soldiers had suffered heavy casualties defeating most of the Arigosian soldiers here, and he hated to think that the Omegians were going to come in at the last minute and take the prize, but he couldn't afford to get them involved in another war just because of pride. Barely keeping the anger out of his voice, Pwnstein spoke into the phone, "Very.... Well. I will cease all combat operations inside the research center."
"Wonderful. Our tanks and black ops will arrive within the next two hours."

Part XIII
Fall Back

May 29, 2013
Impact Crater

This was as close anyone could get to ground zero of the crater impact. The top of the meteorite could be seen about a mile away, glowing above the water. The Arigosians had constructed multiple offshore platforms as close as they could, for research purposes. A small military force had been sent to defend the area, though there had never been any plans for them to actually fight. Word that the Research Center had fallen quickly changed the plans, and the last day had been a tense one, as the soldiers expected imminent attack. None had come during the day, but alert levels still remained high. The only hope of success would be to hold off the Omegians long enough for reinforcements from Schripia to arrive. Which meant they had to hold off the entire might of the Omegian army on their own for the next few days, or possibly even weeks.

Under the cover of an overcast night, small black boats drifted towards the platforms. Before coming in sight of the soldiers on the platforms, barely noticeable black figures slipped from the boats into the water. Underneath the waves, the black ops swam until they were underneath the platforms.
The guards on each platform were quietly and systematically killed as the Omegian agents worked their way up the platforms. Nonmilitary personnel encountered as they moved were dealt with according to their position. Research staff were captured, blindfolded, bound, and gagged. All else were disposed of.

One of the platforms realized what was happening, but their alarms came too late. In under an hour, all platforms had been secured, without the Omegians experiencing a single casualty.

Fort Tallen-New Hongshou Defensive Line, Iustitia

The boy looked so small and frail, curled up in his chair, staring at a blank wall, and shaking. He was the only survivor from the force of mechanized infantry that had been pushing into No-Man's Land earlier that day. Iustitian troops had found him hiding in a crater, by piles of dead soldiers. Attempts had been made to ask him what had wiped out the division, but all anyone had gotten him to say was "The spears.... Oh god, the spears...."

Air recon had flown out shortly after discovering him. Thus far, the only Erebian forces they had found in the area was a group of gladiators who had been pulled from Erebia's blood games to fight on the front lines. Many of them were now wielding weapons taken from the Iusitian mech infantry.
Iustitian officers in command of that section of the front were drawing straws to decide which one of them had to report back home that a force of mech infantry had been completely wiped out by men whose only weapons had been spears and swords.

"*Static*.... several hundred divisions moving southwards rapidly! Erebian forces appear to be in full retreat! Tanks, infantry, there's freakin' everything down there! SAM's too heavy, can't get close enough to fire on....! Chrian jets! They're everywhere! One's locked on m....."

June 9, 2013
Iustitian Military Command, Lanshine, Iustitia

President Kari carefully studied the digital map of No-Man's Land that had been presented to her. For months, the map had been almost exactly evenly divided between Erebian red, and Iustitian blue. Now, except for a few pockets of red, the entire map north of the Erebian's defensive line was turning blue.
"Recent reports from the Chrians say that they have completely eliminated Omegia's air force in the region." One of her generals said.
"Yes," Kari dismissively responded, "and the Bhyu say that they have been under constant bombardment from Omegian planes since they began moving tank divisions into the area. Which one of those reports are we supposed to believe, I wonder?"
The general wisely decided to not continue the conversation, and stepped back so Kari could continue to study the map.

Suddenly turning away from it, Kari asked, "How long until we can begin production of laser artillery similar to the Omegian's?"
The general quickly searched through his memory for when the artillery was supposed to arrive, and then added a few weeks to that date....
"Three to four weeks, ma'am."
"Good. Do not have your forces attack the Tannhauser Line unless an opportunity presents itself. We lost too many men the last time we tried that, without any gain. Hold position, and eliminate any Erebian forces that try and advance, until the artillery arrives. Our air forces will continue to bombard the line; hopefully the Chrians will continue to knock out enough Omegian planes to allow us to fly unhindered. If everything works out as it should, we should be through the line within three months."

Iustitian officers in command of that section of the front were drawing straws to decide which one of them had to report back home that a force of mech infantry had been completely wiped out by men whose only weapons had been spears and swords.

Spearmen defeating tanks.... Go figure. :spear:

Yeah, all that needs to be done before it's released is finish the civilopedia entries, and get sounds for some a lot of units.

Great, will definitely give it a try when you finish. Churning out an entirely new civilopedia and customizing scores of new units with their unique sounds shouldn´t take that long anyway... raaiiight? ;) :mischief:
