The Gamecube Thread

Keep in mind that this is probably only scratching the surface of what Nintendo has in mind. I was a bit suprised myself, but I can see it has potential. Say in Metroid you won't have to press start everytime to see the map. Nintendo will unveil all at E3.

Besides, how many times has Nintendo done something controversial like this? Remember when Metroid Prime was going to be announced as first-person? Or when Wind Waker was found out to be cel-shaded? And yet despite complaints and bashes, Nintendo has always managed to bring out something good and worthwhile.

How about the Virtual Boy or 64DD?

EDIT: Btw, the most interesting thing is that that thing has 1GB of memory, maybe you will download the games.

I would think that Nintendo would have learned their lesson from the Virtual Boy by now, similar to when Nintendo realized cartridges just won't cut it for home consoles.

Yeah, but that was 1 console too late ;)

And I'm skeptical, but I'm looking forward to it...

I mildly screwed myself over playing Resident Evil recently. I didn't realize that the "One Tough Zombie" (attack the zombie Forest, who has a bomb strapped to his chest, and it's game over) mode replaces the normal mode. Even though I have the rocket launcher, that's no help at all. And Forest always seems to pop up in the most inconvenient places. I want to get Chris' second costume, but can't get anywhere because of him! And I'd like to do that before I try tackling the "Real Survivor" or "Invisible Enemy" modes.

That rocket launcher...there's a BFG for you. Not only does it look impressive, you can actually aim it quickly for once instead of taking about two seconds to hoist it up to your shoulders like in the Playstation games. If only they had a magnum with infinite ammo, that would just make my day.:slay: Always my favorite weapon, even more than the rocket launcher.

I'm a bit skeptical as well.

In this interview though, it is known that the two screens can be played as one large screen, giving developers full freedom. Also the screens will be placed vertically.

Yeah, I never thought of it being possible to use both screens as one screen... that makes it a whole lot better.

And them being vertical, I suspected as much.

Leave it to Nintendo to devise some bizarre hardware. After the initial "What the hell?" reaction, I think that there is some potential for a viable platform. One thing's for sure, these games could be very interesting. I think we'll need to wait a little longer before making any more judgments on it, though. Nintendo has a mixed record with its "innovative" products.

I'm tired of talking about the Nintendo DS. As I anticipated, GameFAQs was completely flooded with DS topics, with the majority already bashing it to the ground as the next VirtuaBoy.

So, to be on a lighter note, I got Mario&Luigi and Pac Man vs. today. Mario&Luigi looks like it will be a fun action RPG, and I had a ton of fun playing Pac Man vs. I would strongly recommend Pac Man vs., as it's free and bundled in a couple of Namco games (cheapest being Pac Man World 2 at $20).

Wasn't Virtual Boy the googles you put on your face and it was 3D? And if you played it for too long you went blind?

If it is the thing my friend described to me, it sounds AWESOME! Why do people diss it? Who can't like really early cheap 3D and chance of permanent vision damage!!

Yeah, but I don't think it was in colors, and the most advanced 3d it could produce was some kind of vector thing.

But I don't think you could get blind, maybe dizzy or epilectic.

And btw, I thought it had 1 Giga Byte, not Giga bit as it does... now that blows... :P

I just got The Lord of the Rings:Return of the King. A pretty good game, it's hacknslash, but with style and cool moves. I'm at the second to last level, The Black Gate. It's fun to level your character, and once I beat the game once, I can play any level with any character, and it is fun to play the hobbit levels with Gandalf. There are 3 sets of levels, Path of the Wizard, Path of the King, and Path of the Hobbits. You get more experience points by killing enemies better. You get 4 ratings-Fair, Good, Excellent, Perfect. To get perfect, you must kill enemies in succession without getting hit to build up your skill meter, then you get perfect for a short while and anbody you kill, you will get perfect. I definitely recommend it.

I do wish, though, that Gandalf had more spells. He only has the ones in the movies. Also, while I like that the game is a challenge, I hate it when you get surrounded by enemies and the only way out is to take a few hits so that you can knock over some enemies in the way. The interaction of the levels is fun too, but I wish there was more different kinds of enemies. There are differences between Orcs and Easterlings and Haradrim, you don't really notice besides their looks. There is the differences between them and spiders, but personally I hate facing spiders, too annoying.

Anybody else have that game?

I love Gamecube! Don't own one though. :(

Why don't you buy one then? Only $99 with a free game I think. Or do you have a friend who buys a ton of games and you and some other non-GCN owning friends go over to his house every week? Because I have two friends just like that. :p

Four days until Crystal Chronicles... which I have preordered, and I'll hopefully pick up Zero Mission at the same time. Twin Snakes coming in March, and between the and E3, there's a few games I am somewhat interested in (Harvest Moon, Wario Ware GC, Pokemon Colloseum...) but won't pick up unless I hear astounding reviews or something. Then at E3, I'm awaiting Mario 128 (again), the next GBA Zelda (again), Metroid Prime 2, a Wind Waker sequel, Starfox Armada, Mario Tennis GC, Pikimin 2, and many, many others that I can't think of at the moment. Of course, Nintendo's DS will be revealed (their recent interviews have all been about "wait until E3" over and over again).

EDIT: I just realized that you are Puglover's brother. Not that I'm accusing you or anything, I'm saying that I just realized that. :p

Looking forward to a lot, aren't you, Silverflame? I'm certainly curious about FFCC, so I'll be sure to try it when it comes out. Action RPGs aren't usually my cup of tea, but I'll make an exception for this.
Febuary and its already looking like E3 should be great this year. The DS and WW sequel alone should make it worth keeping tabs on.

Expect me to switch to a FF:CC avatar about the time it comes out. I may even give it its own thread, but that depends on how well it turns out. ;)

It will be my second Final Fantasy, and yet still no mainstream ones yet. Although to tell the truth the turn-based battle system that's usually used doesn't really appeal to me unless it's interactive (either strategy-wise like Fire Emblem or action-wise like Mario and Luigi).

I'm really looking forward to the multiplayer as well even though I can only have two people play at once, but there's no leveling (in the normal way) and spells don't carry over so it will be easy enough for my friends to just come pick-up and start a file. I've always been more fond of smaller scale multiplayer RPG's (not MMO).

On a side note, IGN messed up again, giving it a 7.6, but I won't pick it apart because it's already been done at Penny Arcade:

http://www.penny-arcade.com/news.php3?date=2004-02-04

Gamespot gave it 8.0 which is good considering it gave FFX-2 an 8.1

Gamestop just called saying FF:CC is availble tomorrow morning. It's lucky enough for others getting it at Monday night, here in the west coast we get it in the morning. :)

Not that it really matters, though. I probably won't be able to play it tomorrow because of school-related stuff. Hopefully they will also have Zero Mission availble tomorrow because I didn't preorder that.
