Wether a planet is useful is determined by it's class. Sometimes planets with gas giant-like graphics are habitable - I think it's all just random. As far as I know, unihabitable planets are completely useless.

There are occasionally random events which upgrade the level 0 planets.

i kinda expected the habitable or non-habitable to depend more on the race itself - like humans, they're oxygen-breathers so they prefer planets that are more akin to earth and don't have a thinner, or even a more high-pressure, atmosphere. so only SOME of the nominally-habitable planets would be ideal for humans. then for another race, if they're non-oxygen-breathing, other planets would be ideal for them while the oxygen worlds would have to go through terraforming.
that's one thing i liked in MoO - not all habitable planets were good locations for specific races. it made it much more interesting and competitive to find the right planets.
EDIT: in MoO, with that system, for some beings, even the gas giants were habitable

One of those things I disliek abotu this game.

Most planets are useless, even as mining colonies.

Agreed. Even at the highest techs you can't do anything with them. Give me something to eventually do with every planetary body!

Some of them have tiles that can be "unlocked" by terraforming, I think. Somebody told me that he saw an AI ship colonizing a Class 0 planet.

After playing a little, and still haven't found any use for the uninhabitable planets.

I think they should be alteast mine:able, and move all the resourses (influence, military, research, and economy to the uninhabitable planets)

And also hide em so one won't find em until one mines the planet.
So when u build a mine on the planet, you either get a normal mine, or a special resourse mine ;-)

This would make the distances between stars feel longer (which i say is a good thing), since one won't have starbases in the middle of nowhere mining interstellar space ;).

can we have this as an option in an upcomming patch, Draginol ? :)
