It's a simple thread. Got a cool war story for us? Well, by Jove, let's hear it! Screenshots would help. ;)

I'll give it a shot...no screenshots, I'm at work :(

So I was playing as Oda and I was at hostilities with Catherine for continental supremacy, for pretty much the entire game, until around 1700AD. At some point I decided to stop this war that was wearing us down, but kept my troops on her border.
Suddenly Elizabeth beats me to two wonders (Kremlin and Sixtine Chapel, both within 5 turns to go). I decided it was too much of an insult, and decided to take her down.

As she was on another continent, I carefully planned the invasion. I knew a direct landing on her shores was dangerous, so I bought off Brussels. But their lands were small compared to my armada, so I decided to get an open borders and research agreement with Darius, who was bordering Elizabeth.

In 1816, my troops were still landing in disorder in Brussels and on Darius' beaches.
Just before the invasion, Darius was becoming increasingly hostile, ending our pact of cooperation and questioning me about the positioning of my army...if only there was a way to tell him that I was not after him but Elizabeth :(
So in 1816 although my troops were in complete disorder, I declare war on Elizabeth. Immediately Darius decides to turn up against me, declaring war. Catherine, my long time enemy, follows. The pathetic Ghandi and Washington join too, all against me.

THE GREAT WAR was starting. :c5war::c5razing:

In the opening act of the war, Darius took out 3 of my best war heroes (2 cannons, 1 rifle). My remaining troops, severely outnumbered, quickly formed a defensive line inside Brussels and were able to hold out for a few years. However General Yamamoto, in a crucial tactical mistake, overlooked the persian golden age movement bonus, which cost him his life :suicide: .... leaving the troops without vital leadership, on a foreign continent.

Meanwhile, back on the home continent, Catherine was capturing my allied city states, and slowly moving towards my lands. I upgraded the obsolete pikemen which remained at home, and used General Arminius to create a citadel, in a 2 tile chokepoint. After my last ally Seoul fell, Catherine moved towards the citadel. For years a single rifle war hero was able to hold off the huge Russian force, even under heavy artillery fire. :ar15:

On naval side, my frigates were able to clear most blockades, mostly done by Ghandi, but my economy was still hurt by the resources lost from cancelled trades. I had to trade away 2 small cities to the only living player left that I was at peace with (Suleiman), so my troops won't suffer from unhappiness.

I decided to pull of from the other continent. I was DEFEATED, and more than half of my troops killed. But my own survival was at stake, as Russia was pouring in more troops and was embarking to avoid the citadel.

Within a few years, the few survivors from the persian war reached homeland.
They were greeted with enormous joy, and a counterattack against Catherine was swiftly launched.
Currently heavy battles are waged for the city of Smolensk, and my hopes are I will be able to reach Moscow in the near future, as my newly aquired Zeros take off from Kyoto and Osaka.

PS: sorry for being too, long, I was just bored at work :D

Your foreign policy is amazing. ;)

It wasn't too long.

Should be interesting to see how this war plays out no less. The AIs get jumpy about having a ton of foreign troops in their borders. Probably because they can't see through fog like they used to so now they see you as an AI trying to scout him out.

Sucks huh?

1UPT has opened up some tactical options not available to players before. Unit placement, along with open terrain penalties (only -20% in this mod) combined with ranged bombard resulted in wars for cities for strategic reasons.

I only need a single screenshot to show the general area of war.

There were several reasons for this war. To combat growing Babylon influence, take out a possible regional enemy (he's just due south of me), to get ivory, etc.

But the number one reason is in that screenshot on the map. The rivers. Nippur can only be attacked from two directions easily which made taking and surrounding the city from the north difficult but once those trees are chopped and I start fielding archery units in that city, the city will practically defend itself.

Taking the city had been difficult. Of the five warrior units, I would lose three of those (a new one arrived later). The Babylonian UU, the Bowman, is a terrifying unit. It's range attack can be absolutely devastating to units in open field. In the end, I realized that only way to take the city would be a mass onslaught from all sides. Lost a lot of men but I succeeded.

I marched on Babylon and after taking a look at Babylon, the terrain, and the defending units, I simply sued for peace. There was no way I was going to take Babylon this early. It's on the wrong side of the river for me and there's no terrain for me to defend easily in meaning I would run into problems quickly.

The Fall of Heliopolis in 1310 BC

India and Arabia declares war on Egypt in 1311 BC. The war was decided at the very moment as the Egyptians had already lost Memphis to the Indians in a previous war. Meanwhile, the Arabians had many veterans from the Nippur War. The city was briefly sieged before falling to Arabia. With Thebes in sight, the war should end quickly.

Now I just have to worry about the Iroquois who have declared war on me and threaten Nippur.

So, Egypt decides it doesn't want peace just yet so I try to push into Thebes with my small army in the region. I can't reinforce them because my troops are being tied up at Nippur because the Iroquois are invading. Now, the beginning of the invasion doesn't go very well for me.

Egypt proved harder to take down than I thought. I use to look down on chariot archers but Egyptian War Chariots are no laughing matter. My unit of spears in a jungle bordering the city-limits of Thebes is ripped to shreds by archer fire and a spear charge.

It gets so bad I eventually just stopped invading and go on the defense and sign peace with Egypt. I "won" the war since they had to agree to making peace with Brussels and one-way open borders.

The other war is pretty bad at first. The Iroquois had open borders with the Babylonians and opened up a much longer front than I planned for. Not that I could support a long front. At the time, I only had two spearmen ready to take the blunt of an invasion while more troops were trained.

Nippur was attacked a few times but soon, I was pumping out enough troops to change the tide of battle. I signed an open borders with Babylon (I had to pay them and give them some ivory but I had to choice in the matter).

I eventually pushed the Iroquois out of my country into a patch of neutral territory between the three nations but I signed peace ASAP after seeing Mohawk Warriors. :(

So, India is quickly becoming the power of my side of the world. The Iroquois, who used to be a major power, have been ripped to shreds by the Indians and Babylonians and are barely standing. The English have lost a little bit of their holdings to various powers but remain pretty strong and actually have their capital.

Babylon seemed to have stagnated a little while after losing Nippur to me and Akkad to the Iroquois but have since regained the latter and expanded eastward. By now, I was rolling in iron, with two +6 deposits near my core cities and safe from any possible invasion. I haven't been in a war for a long time but I realized that if I don't do something, India will grow too powerful to take down but I didn't want to take them down yet.

So I picked Babylon. In the last war, I took Nippur but was stopped at the river and forced to enter negotiations. That was back in the day where all I had were warriors and archers were considered extremely high-tech. Now, I'm using longswords and horsemen and catapults, while rare, aren't exactly "new". And unlike the last war, I wasn't aiming for just a city, but five cities. Babylon, Dur-Kurigalzu, Sippar, Ellasar, and Mari. I would raze Sippar and Mari but keep the other cities for good reasons.

Babylon for its marble, silk, and iron. Dur-Kurigalzu for silk. Ellasar for iron.

Yeah, I have a lot of spearmen. I like spearmen. Plus, most of them are veterans from the last war so they would be nice to have around (or so I thought). The reality is that they make good cannon fodder.

The firing pistol (or arrow in this case) goes off and my troops are storming across the borders. The siege of Babylon ended pretty quickly. My troops were torn to pieces but they were supposed to be just a distraction anyway. On the other hand, the rest of the sieges start off with a great start. Mari barely stands a chance.

Those cities fall in rapid succession. Ellasar didn't even require catapults! Still, after taking Sippar, I had to turtle for a little bit because the Babylonians were counterattacking with the sinful Bowmen. The only good news is that by now, I have two catapults near Sippar which I use on the defense.

Once they're taken care of, the final two cities I wanted fall and I got a nice coastal city in a peace treaty.

No more aggression wars for a while. I have a ton of improvements I need to rebuild. The road systems are already in place. :)
