In my current game, I've gone Despotism, Republic, Constitutional Monarchy. Kinda surprised I went that route, what with the war and all. CM has pretty high WW, and I've lost a few cities....but no revolts yet! But the 70% cap on Republic, and the high corruption was killing me.

That's the RnR mod, btw....

But in epic games I generally go to Republic and stay there.

Of course, i take the path
Despotism - Republic.

Since only the first option is partially right while all the other options have governments that i never use and never will use, i chose for despotism.

If anything after despotism is used, it should be communism as former posters indicated.

Despotism -> Monarchy -> Democracy.

That's my usual path, sometimes Republic instead of or after Monarchy.

WW is rarely an issue, so I'm not just a peaceful builder with a low number of defense units - I keep my defense high so I can survive while I muster an offensive against the aggressor or my victims

Same here. Maybe switch from Democracy to Communism later if I have trouble with luxuries. I really like dislike Republic early on, I often have some small conflicts going on and I hate war weariness.

Duh- Despo, Feudalism, Fascism






Actually, I'm generally Despo, Mono, Commie / Fascism depending on empire size. I'm normally making my first major conquests around when Mono comes out, and building up for both war and space in the 3rd / 4th ages. I sort of tend to waver between victory options until the later part of the 4th, when I'm either going to go for a launch, or wipe everyone out. I guess I'll have to be more focused on a certain winning option after I move up from the monarch level.

I generally prefer Democracy but I've been a Communist a few times, especially if the game gets warlike. You have to switch out of Democracy eventually if a war drags on long enough that war-weariness becomes a pain in the posterior, which is all too fast when you have a far-flung empire.

I often lose money when first switching to Republic and occasionally to Democracy, but start to recover once I get some economic improvements in. Build markets, and a few banks if you can, and have them ready or almost ready when you revolt. On the other hand, I could never bring myself to be a Fascist, so I don't know how that would work with my style.
