The INSANE Walkthrough

Well, i'm far from being a good player at this. But i've read all these "walkthroughs" (showcase games would be more appropriate i reckon).
The first time he made one, people said "that's because it was only Monarch". So he made one at Emperor and won. People then came and said "that's because you were Industrious". So he made one without Industrious.
Now he's tried at Immortal, won, and people still come questioning the efficiency of this strategy (even if it might not be the most efficient, it's still pretty efficient since it ends as a win).

But i shall warmly welcome yet another (craziestest ?) walkthrough with him playing a foodless start in tundra, surrounded by aggressive civs, without having the right to build military units.
And win.

One question I have not seen asked in these threads: Do you anticipate the BtS Cav pushback will affect your strategy more than others? I realize things will be situational, but would you expect to hit with Cuirassiers or wait until Cav?

.....

Golden Ages change the game dynamic significantly since they boost GPP production and allow free civics switches. I wonder how you'd adapt to that?

I can't really say yet as I haven't even had a chance to look at BTS yet. In any case, I'm sure I'll work something around to fit in the best I can. And I'm pretty sure the AI is still stupid BTW.

After some matches of BtS (only at Prince because i paused Civ4 for over a year and never bothered too much for micromanagement) i found that the basic strategy still works. The cav-beeline however is less effective, but i already posted in the 1st game that i rather attack with maces and catapults, so no real difference for me. You will inevitably lose any possible tech lead at this war phase, but you can catch up soon enough. Especially capturing an enemy capital early is a good thing, since they have extra ressources.

Thanks for another amazing write up! I really hope we'll see a BTS version of this strategy soon as I'm very curious to see what the changes to the Great Wall will do to affect your planning (such as would you consider great spies as pollution etc?)

Also now the AI seems to build a heck of a lot more units and seems much more aggressive once the medieval era hits. You might now be forced into more unwanted wars. I'm confident you'll overcome these hurdles though. :goodjob:

hey, great walk through. i've always liked SE better than cottages too :D. i just tried something like this on emperor for my first time. missed oracle, but still got liberalism. however, i didnt go the cav route since (for one im on bts so that's a whole other story) but early axe rushed my small continent neighbor. well see if i win the space race though ;). really enjoyed it.

hey veggie, if you're curious about the gw in bts i had a recent experience with it. in one of the first emperor games i played. i ended up getting 2 great spies which i settled in my capital. this gave me ~48 espionage points a turn which i used on the civ that i was destined to go to war against. i ended up stealing 2-3 big techs from him (constructions, metal casting, and i think CoL?) but it is a great GP to get and settle early on. made me appreciate espionage a LOT more.

Another well played game at a very high level. For your next game could you try this strategy with a leader that is neither Industrious or Philosphical? I am not saying iy isn't a good strat, the wins speak for themselves. But it might be harder to duplicate without having copper within your first 2 cities. And what happens when you get a prophet instead of an engineer? Not saying you reload to get an engineer, just you seem blessed with copper and GE's

Great work! I have read all of your walkthroughs and tried to copy them my self in BTS. It works out quite well, until I get attacked by the AI. Its hard to build a large army, when my capital almost always are building wonders.
I would love to se a new walkthrough for BTS :)

Hi!
I have just read your walkthroughs and wouldnt call them insane as i do my strategy very similar to this from the begining. (i play on emperor+) the difference is that i focus more on research (instead of production) in the capital and I try to play more peacefully (usually i just defend myself-not saying this is good, it's just my style :) )
my strategy: (i always play with either philo or industrial leader) i focus on 2 wonders: the pyramid and the great library in the capital. the two national wonders i build there is the national epic and the oxford university.
In the begining I build the library in the capital and start to "produce" great persons and i always settle them in the capital. Later (in caste system) other cities also focus on food production and running only merchant specialist. great merchant then go and settle in the capital.
with philo leader + national epic+ pacifism+(pantheon) i can get close to 200 GP points per turn in the capital and close to 800 points research b4 scientific method. with the many great scientist settled in the capital i have quite good production there, but for units i always have an other production city with heroic epic, military academy etc.

Which victory condition do you go for with this strat? It must be hard to do space without some very good production cities.

I always get the tech lead and later (in the modern times) i usualy dont have anything to do with my cities just to start wars with infantries, tanks etc. But usually i just stop playing this time and start a new game because i dont like the modern wars in civ :) (too slow play). I could easily win the space race because of my tech lead and i do have good production cities (i build farms and mines/workshops even save as many forest as i could) but i have found the space race too easy so the only active win option (usually) is conquest (domination).
btw i always play with techtrade off (and no goody huts) so even if I allow diplomatic victory its quite hard w/o gifting techs.

The only problem with my strat that sometimes i got outrunned by the enemy b4 i can build up my military. Usually i could defend myself but it takes too much energy. In one of my games i have fought an 1500 years long war with Tokugawa...and well im not a military genius the war didnt go well.. too wide borders and i wanted to focus more on economy techs rather than military. so i could stop him but i couldnt get to build enough city for the oxford university and i had to produce too much units instead of improwements so falled behind in advancement compared to some other civs.

Ehm sorry for my nubbish, but i can't understand how hammers are calculated here.... you have 350% bonus on 68baseH+64chopH... (64+68)*3.5 = 132*3.5=462 really far from what you get :D
Where i'm wrong?

Thanx, your game are really immersive.
