The "joke unit" is totally imbalanced

in my game, I was just backfilling techs waiting for my final spaceship part to be completed.

a couple turns later, an allied militaristic CS gifted me a GDR

GDR are weaker then nukes. Just for fun I gifted 3 GDRs to a city state to test this while waiting on my last space ship part to finish. I then declared and dropped a nuke on the 3 gdrs. There were no more gdrs after that...

Fly on the wall at test meeting ...

Tester:
"These endgames are ridiculous, we have a map full of units on every single tile, no stack move commands, and it'd take Kasparov to even understand the tactical situation even if it was physically possible to control it."

Shafer:
"Yeah I see your point dude, what we need is something that can simplify things again and cut through the chaff, some kind of ... uh, I dunno, some kind of giant death robot or something."

Tester:
"Wouldn't that be unbalanced?"

Shafer:
"Think of it like a penalty shootout at the end of soccer game, somebody has to win but all the players are exhausted and it's just cruel to let it carry on".

Tester:
"Yeah I get it, you rock man, the GDR is a righteous idea! The Civ Fanatics are gonna love it too, they have such a great sense of humour!"

Fly on the wall:
"zzzzzz .. uh-oh .. zzzzzzz"

I like to play modern starts...GDR seriously makes that much less fun.

I guess they're no gundams, just like the samurai don't have those legendary swords that slice through reinforced metal.

Actually metals in general struggle vs other well-engineered metal. Deadliest warrior threw a lot of things at the old spartan shields, and they were apparently well-made enough to survive pretty much any melee weapon the soldier was strong enough to parry, including things designed specifically to destroy shields :/. Chain mail isn't very good against stabbing weapons though, and blunt force trauma can do a lot when armor piercing isn't practical :p.
