The building they used for the Kremlin is not the Kremlin :( It's a church located near the Kremlin on the Red Square (St.Basil Cathedral i think). The Kremlin is the fortification built from red bricks and the area inside...

that is correct but that also is knowledge thatis not available to a broader western crowd.

That's true - the "Kremlin" in Civ4 is actually St Basil's Cathedral. However as Richosh pointed out, an average Western person would not know what St Basil's Cathedral is, but would not recognise a picture of the Kremlin. So I guess Firaxis went with a picture which people would recognise as being something Russian, and with a name that most people would have heard about.

I wanna say you underestimate the average western person, but I fear you may be right....
Though such ignorance is probobly more prevolent here in the US then in Europe....
Regardless, I think it would have still been better to go with the real Kremlin, that way Firaxis wouldn't promote a false association.

One adult person I once knew was amazed when she found out our solar system had an Asteroid belt......

I'd just like to point out that the image for The Internet is a picture of Al Gore...

It's an abstraction people.

An abstraction of a red brick fortress is ... a cathedral? The front tower where the Soviet leaders would stand at a parade facing the red square would be very recogniseable to people, especially if you put a nice red star on it.

This bugged me, too-- the average "Western" person isn't going to know what any of those more ancient wonders looked like. So why make the compromise for The Kremlin? They should have just stuck to being accurate.

Probably "artistic license".

Artists, especially cgi artists, tend to want to do fun/enjoyable and challenging projects just like any of us. Would you rather do a boring squat brick building or a pretty church with minarets in a kaleidoscope of color?

The picture of Gore as the interweb is a vast right wing conspiresy to make the Dems. look silly. It's a joke. Its to bad that either firaxis thinks we are to dumb to know what the Kremlin looks like or that they don't know what the building looks like. The only thing worse then ignorance is the perpetuation of ignorance.

It's an abstraction in the sense that if you show a red bricked building, few people are going to recognize what it's representing just based on the image, but if you show the spired towers of St Basil's, everyone realizes what the image is trying to convey.

Not in the sense that it represents the technically correct representation for the meaning and origin of the Kremlin, but that it represents a conceptual class of iconography of the idea being presented.

Quit being so anal retentive :P

Granted, the Al Gore image is more funny than a good abstraction of the Internet, but it's still an abstraction in itself and most definitely gets the (multiple) point(s) across.

When I think of the Kremlin I think of those cute, round colored turrets. So if its looks like that it's good enough for me :)

This is very true. Calling a dog a "woof" just because some toddlers say that when pointing at a canine is a very bad idea.

The real question is who is calling it a 'woof' and who's calling it a Canis Familiaris rather than just a damn dog.

I wondered how long it would take for someone to notice this. I'd have preferred that they call it St. Basil's Cathedral, but in the end I'm gonna have to go with Jebus on this one:

Another thing I've noticed is that the Hindu Missionary is Ghandi. If you have one selected and mouse away so that it shows a little arrow with a picture of the unit's face, it's the same picture that they use for the leader Ghandi.

Few people in the US would even know it's Russian if you showed them St. Basil's Cathedral. I've known some kids in highschool who have never heard of the Soviet Union or Josef Stalin. Most are more concerned with their next football or basketball game.....But anyway I just think St. Basil's Cathedral is more recconizible than the REAL Kremlin. When I saw Algore's face on the internet I just laughed and got on with the game.

Well, that's new to me. I guess you learn something new everyday. Whenever I thought about the Kremlin, I always pictured about those spires. I'm sure many, many people would make the same mistake.
