what i mean is dividing it into political & current events or important issues, and one of ...well..... "what kind of pet, or how tall are u" issues

NO WAY! Of course not........

I am really annoyed by such a proposal. So far in this thread, I have seen not a single advantage of a split-up. Could anyone explain?

The very reason I never come into H&J and rarely in History and Sports, is the simple fact they are seperated.

But that is not the relevant. So far, I fail to see the advantage of a split up.

So far in this thread, I have seen several valid objections (Funxus, Zulu, Fred), but all pro split-up mebers just say: "Yes", "Do it", or "Give it a try"..... That sais enough, doesn't it!

You are against it, then I'm going to support it ;)
So, great idea XIII

I really wouldn't like a split of OT. I lurk in OT at least once a day (though I don't post very often) and my interest in it would wane considerably. Please keep it the happy mix it is now.

The good thing about OT the way it is, is that you have such a wide range of topics to choose from all at once. Milk and coffee seperately are ok, but together, theyre much better. Please dont deconstruct the flavorfull blend that currently exists. Light and dark work well together. Would a piano that had all the white keys on one side and all the black keys on the other work as well?
Ebony and ivory live together in perfect harmony, side by side on my piano keyboard, oh Lord, why cant OT?

I say yes.

I can't understand why anyone would be opposed really, those who want to take part in serious discussions can easily find what they want, those who want to talk about music, their weight and height etc. can easily find what they want.

Personally, I think the discussion in OT is too diverse to keep under one space.

I don't see much use in seperating OT, and I like it the way it is. I don't think the forum's traffic is heavy enough to justify such a move and it does add extra volume, as nearly everyone participate in both kinds of topics.

Exactly.

If it's not broke, don't fix it.

Completely unnecessary.

Go for it. But two forums at the root would be better than a sub-forum IMHO.
It'll look like : -

The Light Side of the OT
The Dark Side of the OT
World History
Humor and Jokes
.
.

;)

No subforums.

I don't like those names either. What's wrong with simply adding a political forum? Those names are pointless in my opinion.

But then again, I think the idea itself is pointless...

And why will this make things more efficient? (for the third time I ask this question.... An answer would be nice.....)

And your description is still vague. Where would the religion related threads go according to your idea? Neither political/current, nor an "what kind of pet, or how tall are u" issue.

Is it an important topic? Maybe! Maybe not. How to decide?

And what is light and what is dark?????

The idea becomes a bit ridiculous this way.
Unlike sports or history, light & dark are very very vague discriptions. I really do not understand the need of adding these vage subtopics...

"Religion & World Affairs" + "Trivial stuff" do sound better

Like I said, we can decide on the names later...

I'll start a thread later, on naming them...

Pls don't threadjack again. ;)

I have made my points in the old proposal thread; I am not going to repeat myself.

Could you provide a link then? I really am guessing on advantages of dividing OT, so it might enlighten me!

BTW: it is not the names. but it is what issues are light and what issues are dark. And where is the difference and who is gonna decide?

Light is stuff like "what's your favorite food?" or "how tall/fat/skinny are you", while dark is politics, religion & co.

I think it's a good idea to redefine OT a bit differently.

The reason I think it's a good idea is mainly cause when you come to OT roughly half (this isn't as a rule) of the topics are either religion or politics and other current events of the day. It seems that these topics warrant there own topic because of the popularity of the subjects.

But to be 100% honest the main reason is that I like to have a light hearted time at OT and when your constantly confronted by the same subjects ( often in negative lights, masqurading as legitimate points of view), It can be a bit of a negative experience sometimes.
I have only been a regular at OT for the last 3 months. I enjoy it.
But sometimes it seems that the only reason that people post is NOT to discuss relevant issues in a well thought out meaningful way with respect for others opinion, but to berrate anothers point of view.Or to push their own. (And this is no more obvious then in religious topics).

For this reason I think that OT should have a lighter side of' section and a current affairs section.
