The Men Who Stare At Goats

I originally was interested in it, but it scored some pretty meh reviews on RT. I have been using that site to prescreen movies I'm interested in seeing ever since I watched Year One, and because of that, I was dissuaded from seeing it.

I am interested in seeing Youth in Revolt, looks interesting and it's scoring some good opening ratings. My friends and I are going to see daybreakers this weekend. It's a bit borderline on RT (about 70%), but what the hey, at least it's fresh.

I won't even let me play GTA
I'm surprised it is even allowed in the Philippines. :mischief:

Spoiler :
On May 23, as you are undoubtedly aware, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that the head of the MTRCB, Marissa LaGuardia, had sent a memorandum to the producers of a television program, “The Buzz,” warning them about positive depictions of lesbian relationships. The memo stated that “lesbian and homosexual relationships are an abnormality of human nature. … To show such kind of abnormality/aberration on prime time TV programs gives the impression that the network is encouraging lesbian and homosexual relationships.” After another program, “S-Files,” aired the wedding of a lesbian couple on May 16, the MCRTB sent the producers a similar memorandum. It stated, “To allow lesbians or homosexuals to kiss each other on television during prime time is tantamount to saying to children who watch your program that to be lesbian or homosexual is all right.”

From the reviews it got, it looked like an excellent concept for a comedy that they just didn't execute right. Like License To Wed or I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry.

Sadly, I think most movies these days can best be seen as trailers.

Something tells me this film wasn't made with the cooperation of the US armed forces.

The R rating is frequently used to censor controversial subjects in the US and elsewhere. For instance, there is a strong movement underfoot to make any movie that shows smoking to be rated "R" on that basis alone.

The government isn't in charge of the ratings system which is completely voluntary. My father never really grasped the concept of age appropriateness so I've seen almost every movie ever made by Steven Segal

Okay, smartypants - I Googled the movie, and I still don't understand why they stare at goats.

It's based on a series of experiments in the 1970s when a section of the US military investigated the possibility of non-violent aggression, in this case using parapsychological methods; the investigation came to naught - with the exception of 1 dead goat. The documents on which the reporter based his story were on-line until removed at some point.

Haven't seen the actual movie yet, but according to a review the mixed up storylines didn't do the movie too much good. Just thought it was pretty funny. I usually check out trailers after reading a review, to check if the review holds up (not the other way around).

I wasn't trying to suggest that it was the government who is trying to censor this movie. It is the people who review the flicks and decide which rating it deserves, e.g. the censors.

But there is nothing really "voluntary" about a system which is so entrenched. They directly influence what is, or what is not shown, or even discussed, in nearly every single film which is produced outside of "pornography" and a few independent films.

been wanting to see this one a lot.

saw the author interviewed on The Daily Show, the book looks interesting as well.

Coen brothers, isn't it?

I saw it in the theater on Thanksgiving with my little sister. (she loves this sort of movie) It's a funny movie, and a good watch... I don't know if I'd say it's worth going to see, though. It's only mildly funny. A much better comedy from last year (and one more rewarding to see in theaters) is Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. Dry, dialogue intense movies are a lot better in a living room with all your friends than in a theater with strangers.

Also, my sister is 14, but there wasn't anything in it I felt was awkward or inappropriate for her... except maybe some naked old guy butts. The drug use is very light and humorous. Nothing graphic at all. It's much cleaner than a lot of PG-13 movies I've seen.

Somebody made this lol on the Cheezburger site... personally, I'd rather watch this movie:

Much as I would like to see that movie, I'm worried as to if that is a really small goat or a scarily vast cat.

goats are funny. smart too.

I had to take care of some annoying goats last summer for a while. little basterds climbed on the top shelf of the kitchen (outdoor) and took a piss.

I threw utensils.

Goats saved my life when I was a baby. I was allergic to cows' milk, so my grandfather got a couple of nanny goats (we lived on an acreage then).
