The most defensible location of all time

Not only is this a choke point for the entire continent, the angle of attack is covered by a mountain and two hills. You'll also note Austria's Great Wall in the image. Even my 5-movement Keshiks won't be able to fire and get out of range in this terrain, not even the ones with 3 range.

I believe the forested hill towards Belgrade overs a vantage from which I can hit the city (without entering the penalty area of the Great Wall), not sure about the desert hill southeast of the mountain.

I might try to pull some classic Mongol shenanigans and go for a swim to attack from the more open other side, but the Great Wall is still powerful and given that I'm at war with the entire world and have no navy, this might be a poor idea.

As a side-note, apparently the steam hotkey F12 to take a screenshot is also used by Civ5 to quickload a save (nice one QA... given that Steam is mandatory this should have been caught), so I'll actually have to replay from turn 170. Is there any way to change Civ5's hotkeys?

there is an option in the game option which allow you to change the turns between autosaves, the default is 10 turns before autosave. Me, i changed it to 2
 
Why not just embark to the plains/desert to the South and come back up, just curious?
 
First, conquer Belgrade. Then, one Keshik can attack and get out of city-bombardment range, using the desert SE of the mountain. From Belgrade, using that road to the forested hill, 3 more Keshiks can attack and get out of range. 4 is plenty to take Linz in short order.

Looks to me like there's a city down there. Probably opening yourself up to a world of hurt going that route.

I don't really understand your question. Is your problem that you cannot load quicksaves, because F12 doesn't work? But you can easily load quicksaved games from the standard load screen. F11 to make a quicksave works fine. Then press Ctrl+L and choose the quicksave entry in the list of saved games.

No, the problem is that the quickload key (F12) is the same as the screenshot key (F12), so when you try to take a screenshot with the in-game screenshot key (F12) it does it THEN it loads your last quicksave... This usability bug has been around for quite a while, I never really encounter it cuz I rarely take screenshots and when I do I use the Mac way anyway which is a completely different key combo.

Oh I get it now. So he was complaining that when he made the screenshot, the game loaded an old quicksave and now he has to replay it (unless there are autosaves).

Just go get a worker, put a road on that forest tile and one other, then your keshiks can use it to pound the city, riding around the outside of Austrian territory and using that hill.

If for some reason you need to steer clear of Belgrade put the road on the sand at the bottom but Austria might expand over the road there.

Workers are key to efficient warfare. A road on the right tile can save you many units. Let your keshiks do something else until the road is done, leave one unit to protect the worker.

There are four hills that you could put crossbows on as well. I don't think that city is all that hard to take down!

Or wait for frigates. Four of them could bombard that city.
 
I once had a defensive position in MP that was even better than that. There was a chokepoint because of mountains with only one tile that could be passed through. To the rear of that, I had several artillery that had that tile covered, and I would cycle my melee units as they got injured to prevent the enemy from passing through the chokepoint. By the time my melee was badly damaged, I had one in reserve that healed to full strength, I would constantly cycle the units so that a melee unit was never killed.

Even if the other guy had nukes, I could have just had mobile artillery even farther back that was out of range of attack, and I could bring them forward instantly. It's really hard to describe this chokepoint, I wish I had a screenshot to show you, it was just amazing. The other guy tried to get through for several hours, and it was fun to just sit back and defend. The other guy finally gave up and said that it was totally immpossible to get through such a strong defensive position.

The only way around it would be to use Carthage (but this was before Carthage was in the game). Maybe a navy would have helped too, but this guy was focused on land units and trying to break through with an army. And this position was completly impossible to break through with just an army.

Airforce? Bombers make short work of Artillery.

Although no Carthage means Vanilla, back when Artillery was just really OP.

That's correct. I've used F12 with no problems before because I had no quicksaves, but I guess I made one by accident at some point.

This is an extremely frustrating bug, doubly so because it absolutely should have been caught in a game that has mandatory Steam integration.
 
Not even close. In this one game Rome's capital was surrounded by jungle, had river on two sides and nothing but jungle hills. It was almost impossible to take, but after a long time I managed it.
 
I agree with Gamgee. This position is nothing extraordinary.

The worst enemy position I have ever encountered was a japanese city located in hills covered with jungle. There was no access to it from the south because there was a row of mountains. To the west was the rest of their empire and to the east there was some more impassable mountains. The only real access was from the north: junge on hills, river between tiles 2 and 3 from the city and everything covered with enemy roads. AI had the Great Wall, ofc. Fighting against samurais, who do not get dmg penalty, was fun. The city remained untaken (immortal/large/continents).
 
Although that Polish city is vulnerable by sea. There was a thread recently that had a city that impressed me as extremely difficult to attack by land and sea.

The only negative I can see is that Vatican City appears to be on flatland.
 
I kind of want to play that save, though. It looks like a fun challenge.
