Ancient: Caravan
Medieval: Pikeman placed on a mountain. (Stand against the waves!)
Industrial: Ironclad (It looks cool and it makes citywalls look like cardboard)
Modern: Nuclear Veapons!
Nuke the planet 40 times over and watch the AIs cities starve whilst you continue to harvest the sea. Thats rather fun.
Ancient: Catapults. Slow but deadly. I know well the sinking feeling of a bunch of catapults creeping towards one's city, and I like for my enemies to experience that sinking feeling.
Medieval: Knights. Mostly due to appearance and well-roundedness (speed, strength, etc.)
Industrial: Engineers, hands down. So fast... so talented... *drool*
Modern: Stealth fighters. They hit, and hit, and hit, and hit, and hit some more.
I won't really comment on appearances because I've changed almost every unit's graphics in my Civ.
I'm starting to like trucks a lot more nowadays. Watching a couple slide into an AI city...demanded Silk...1500-1800 payoff in cash & beakers...an advance a turn for 20 turns+.
I'm seriously seduced by these guys to point of negleting to manufature war material and thus all but frogetting the other aspect of the game.
