The Music Recommendation Thread

listening to tha alkaholic's "only when im drunk" right now

I was going to post a long recommendation post in Mr. Dictators hip hop thread a few days back, but then a flame war had to send that thread crashing.

So now I will recommend just about all the music I can reccommend.:)

Hip Hop:

-Tupac (Yes, he may be a fanboy icon, but he does have classic, thoughtful music up his sleeve.)

-Common (My most recommended hip hop artist. People I know who don't ordinarily like hip hop love Common. Probably because he doesn't rap about b!tches and bling. His newest album, Be, is simply awesome.)

-The Pharcyde (Quality, lighthearted, humorous hip hop.)

-A Tribe Called Quest (Easily one of the best hip hop groups ever. They have done it all.)

-De La Soul (In the same vein as A Tribe Called Quest, the longest running, and one of the best hip hop groups.)

-Outkast (Not so much their recent material, but their recordings from the 90's are priceless.)

-Nas (Some of his stuff is garbage, but he is without doubt one of the most talented and important MC's in hip hop's history.)

-Talib Kweli (His recent material isn't that good, but from '98-2002 he was on fire.)

-Mos Def (See Talib Kweli.)

-Gangstarr (One of the best DJ/MC duos in history. It simply doesn't get any better than this.)

-RUN DMC (Need I say more?)

-Slick Rick (Very charismatic MC, with an
excellent debut album from the golden age.)

-Pete Rock & CL Smooth (Another excellent DJ/MC duo.)

-J-Live (A superb MC from New York. Check out his debut album.)

-NWA (Some may not dig the Gangsta rap, but no one does it like these guys.)

-Ice Cube (A tremendous force on the microphone in his early days. Nowadays he sucks.)

-Big L (Another artist that not many will like due to his abraisive lyrics, but I like his material a lot, so I will put him in here.)

-Supreme NTM (Excellent hip-hop from France. I know absolutely no French, yet these guys still kick ass.)

Jazz:

-John Coltrane (THE saxophone man. Tracks like "Naima", "Alabama" and "My Favorite Things" will make you beg for more.)

-Miles Davis (THE jazz man. Not only could he play a mean trumpet, but he could assemble some of the most kick ass quartets/quintets ever to play.)

-Dave Brubeck (THE piano man. Just listen to "Take Five" and find yourself pressing the rewind again and again.)

-Ronnie Laws (A bit more of a smooth/funk jazz artist, but he is very enjoyable when you just wanna chill.)

Other/Misc:

-Bob Marley (You wouldn't have reggae without this man. Period.)

-Jimi Hendrix (You wouldn't have modern Rock & Roll with out Jimi. The most talented Rock guitarist ever.)

-Rammstein (These dudes play some mean heavy metal, sing in German, and I STILL like 'em! I don't know half of what they are saying, but they still rock hard.)

-John Lee Hooker (The best blues man ever. No one did it like John.)

I think I deserve a hats off!

EDIT-Typos.

and you get one :hatsoff:

but ive loved all of those hip hop artists (exept some one the end) for a long time

but as for the jazz might i add

Weather Report - just amazing stuff on all their albums

Kenny Burrell - nice late night style jazz, pick up midnight blue

and

Charlie Hunter - plays his own custom guitar (i think its an eight string) but it reminds me of the fusion jazz pioneered by miles

and for the sake of avoiding the guilt for leaving him out

Django Reinhardt - excellent gypsy jazz guitarist

I'd also like to throw the Dirty Dozen Brass band and Professor Longhair for some good ol fashioned Naw'lins jazz/R&B

And if we're talking blues, you cant forget the king :)

good list though

by the way, dawgphood, ever heard or murs, madlib, lyrics born, or Deltron 3030

its all great but i think im in love with blackalicious

and for comedic value i also nominate MC Chris (or MC PeePants for the Adult Swim addicts)

Murs: Heard of him, heard he's good, haven't got any of his stuff.

Madlib: Same with Murs.

Lyrics Born: Same with Murs.

Deltron 3030: Yeah! Awesome combination of talent if you ask me. I have a few of their songs, I probably should get their album.

Blackalicious is also good, though I haven't heard much of them either. Guess i'm just too broke to buy good music legitimately.

Though I really should do some catching up.

I dont know who i could nominate after MC Hammer, so instead i will nominae a hardrock/alternative group that i like :)

They are relatively known -in Europe at least. Therapy? are a group which formed in the early 90s- end of 80s, and had five or six albums, including a greatest hits. Their two first albums (Nurse, and Troublegum, the latter of which made them a big-selling band) are more angsty, since the lead singer/guitarist Andrew Cairns was suffering from Body Dysmorphic Disorder at the time, and whereas the third album (Infernal Love) still has some of that thematic, it appears that Cairns had started treatment during its recording. However due to a considerable talent, at least in relation to other pop musicians, Cairns manages to write more interesting music in latter albums as well, with songs revolving around the themes of bad childhood, problematic relations with his mother, BDD, and the occasional death-lust. Even more rare are some mystically themed songs in Troublegum.
Therapy's last album is High Anxiety, which i personally liked, although in my view they have lost some of the older edge, but that was to be expected after more than a decade :)

Oh hey you guys, cheack out my friend Joel Jacob. He's really good, serriously. I'm not like making that, like, I'd listen to him even if I didn't know him.

Also, this guy is pretty cool. I saw him in SLO a few years ago.

I have more where that came from If you like

My one reccomendation for Hip Hop would be Saul Williams. I really love his music, and i'm a metal/industrial guy!:)
