The Music Recommendation Thread

If were going along the lines of Prog, Then The Mars Volta are one of the best out right now.

Isn't Opeth Swedish?
Yes they are. I'm wearing a long sleeved Opeth t-shirt right now, bought at the concert some months ago. :)

But they're not a band I recommend when discussing progressive rock, I recommend them when discussing progressive metal. :) Someone who thinks Pink Floyd is a nice laidback band might not appreciate the double bass drums and growling of Opeth, especially if they haven't been warned. ;)

Personally I don't like the Mars Volta, I can't stand his singing.

I saw one album by Opeth (Still Life) for sale but wasn't sure if I should get it because I only heard one song from them, and it wasn't from that album.

Riverside are a bit similar to Opeth, but have an electronic ambient sound (similar to Dream Theater with Kevin Moore or Porcupine Tree) and less growling.

The Mars Volta originally started as a punk band.

what does that have to do with anything?

actually tho, they fragmented from at the drive in, which was punk, but they felt like doing something more

sry for what, i just asked why you brought it up?

well to be prog you just have to push boundaries, so anything can be prog in a sense, its just most punk is cliche

I fell In love with The Mars Volta after seeing them open up for System of a Down last year. They are the single best band I have ever seen live

"hey lets copy what that guys doing"

All their albums are good. I'd probably recommend you to start with Blackwater Park, but Still Life is good too.

I'm gonna check out Riverside, but it doesn't look like they're too close to Opeth which seems to be much more death metal. But then I haven't heard them yet, so maybe I should just shut my mouth.

yes, i fell in love with blackwater park

cant remember any of the song titles though :hmm:

I never saw Blackwater Park (Is that the album with The Drapery Falls? That's one of two songs I heard of them).

Riverside aren't death metal, but the vocals are similar to Opeth.

Yes, The Drapery Falls is from Blackwater Park. :)

Which type of vocals? Both? Mikael Åkerfeldt sings both in a clear soothing voice and death metal growling.
