The point of Cruise Missles?

A good example of teh Cruise missle in real life is the Tomahawk which has a range of 1,000 miles. the F-15 has a range of 3,450 miles. So with a 6 moves for the F-15 which ahs 3 times the range of a cruise missle the 2 moves would be accurate (assuming I'm reading the units thing right on the units page)

Hey, check my first Link in my signature!

It talks all about cruise missiles!

I think the CM range should be incresed to three, just because for many units (specifically ships) they can already bombard at range 2, but they can do that every turn. I think, because the CM is a one time thing, it should have a slightly farther reach. If a battleship w/ a CM squared off against one without a CM, then the battleship w/ the CM should have that first strike option.

If each square represents 500-1,000 miles how is a battleship launching a 16 inch shell that far if im correct in thinking even an Iowa class battleship can only launch a shell 24 miles. Im trying to figure out how to get in the editor and give the cruise missle a range of 8. I requested a missle boat to carry them and I figure it can give fire support to inland marine and MA operations. Is that a good idea?

in my mod cruise missiles are range 4, as I feel anything greater would make them too powerful.

The Iowa class Battle ship carries 32 Tomahawk cruise missles, I looked at some data and the only true combat ship the US Navy has that doesn't have Tomahawk Cruise missles is the Oliver Hazard Perry Class Guided missile frigate, the command ships, ampibious landing ships, and aircraft carriers don't carry them but exluding the carriers they aren't weapon platforms and carriers have their planes which have more range and other escort ships so the cruise missles would be pointless on them.

Yes I did know about the USS Iowa having them but I was talking about those great big 16 inch cannons that could pound just about anything into the ground. Its strange a Guided Missle Frigate dont got Cruise Missles aint it?

yeah for the record the Oliver Hazard Perry class has Standard SM-1MR Surface to Air missiles and Harpoon Anti Ship Missiles, both launched by a Mk 13 Guided Missile Launcher, which I find rather pathetic, yes it has some smaller guns and all but in the age of long range missles that isn't that much. But yes you are right about the 16" guns pounding anything within range (not sure what the range is exactly the are out of date now so I'm having a hard time finding their range) The battleship was powerful in its day, but they are obsolete in teh modern age where a stinking cruiser can waste them

I believe the range is 24 miles YIKES!!! As for smaller 5 inch guns there is a new one being developed that launches GPS guided shells at ranges of 100 miles! I love my aircraft carriers but I cant believe they replaced my beloved battleship :(.

I haven't heard of a shell with that kind of range but you may be thinking of the harpoon missle system, which has a range that is said to be in excess of 60 nautical miles which means at least 70 miles, which is one of the reasons the battleship is so obsolete nowdays. The current 5" naval guns can launch a shell just under 15 miles which is rather impressive in itself. If you find a source of info on a 5" gun with a 100 mile range let meknow where to find the source, it would be interesting reading
