The Pokemon Go Craze

Nintendo suffers huge first-quarter loss as Wii U and 3DS sales tumble

Dictator Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela said that Pokémon Go creates a culture of violence and death that will create monsters.

Well it was "Pocket Monsters" originally, and they wouldn't be getting created if the game didn't exist.

The game doesn't function if it's not actively open.

Mobile OS apps in general don't function if the they're not actively open. If they want to do something (say, play music in the background) the OS basically has a list of background stuff it will do, and you can handoff the music you want to play to the background music player, so it will function when the app isn't otherwise "open" in any meaningful sense.

Presumably "do stuff with pokemons" isn't in the list of background stuff programmed into operating systems.

That was fast.

Yawns.

Some player frustration over the whole "sightings" fiasco + the normal decline most games face after a month = this. Still a massive active playerbase (especially since, at best I can read the graph and source, they stat the iOS and Android apps separately), so "that was fast" is a complete joke of a comment. ¸

I agree, I was quite confused by it because 30 million players is an enormous number.

"At its peak"

"Several weeks after its peak" (and after a Reddit-fueled revolt by some players over the fact that their cheat tools got banned).

It's almost like apples and oranges, or something.

Naaaaah, can't be.

that's not really surprising, i'm playing it less now than i was a few weeks ago

it's a nice game to play on longer walks, which is what i expect it will continue to be

Query: I see it is available in the Philippines. Here "Philippines" usually means the city of Manila on the island of Luzon.

Is there anyway of tell if it is available on the hick island of Bohol?

App stores don't really give the ability to publishers to publish to areas other than by country.

Any location and social based app isn't going to work as well if you're on a hick island - presumably Yelp isn't of much value to you either, even if it's available.

There's plenty of Ingress portals in Bohol so there will be pokestops and gyms too.

If they add more features people will keep playing it.

Searches seem to indicate there are two located in the Island City Mall in western city of Tagbilaran and at least one in the northern city of Talibon. I'm on the south coast. :(

The good news is a wind farm projected to cost in the hundreds of millions of dollars is set to be build in the hills above Jagna, the next town over, in 2018. That should bring in tons of new technology.

The bad news is I've promised to give my Smart Phone to Irish for her birthday next month.

I found Pokemon's Poke Radar site. It shows none on Bohol, 2 on the island of Cebu, 2 on Mindanao, 30 in Manila. And  15 in Ho Chi Minh City. D*mn commies get everything.

You could always play on PC and pretend you're in Tokyo or whatever

The idea was to get me up off my protruberous posterior and out walking on a search for imaginary creatures.

That's user submitted data, it shows none in my city either. The ability to remote scan through their API was unintended, and has been blocked.

it's just what happens when people binge on an extensively hyped game, plateau at a certain point and lose interest

i'm sure they'll continue adding new features (new pokemon gens for example) and people will come back to it, it'll spike in popularity again, then stabilize at the level of activity it's at right now again

it's not a bad thing, and i still see people playing it when i'm out, so it's not dead
