I have always felt that it's extermely important to build the pyramids. I'm looking for a second opinion

shoot yeah. makes the civ grow twice as fast. ive even disbanded all defence and sold improvements if i had to get it.

I stopped building the pyramids a little while ago without serious problems. Without the pyramids, you can still enjoy explosive growth. Every so often, switch to a republican government. Set the luxuries rate to 80% and leave it there for a few turns. The "We love the King days" will make your cities jump in population at a rate of one new citizen per turn. When you've grown enough, or get strapped for cash, revert back to Monarchy (or whatever you were using) and drop the luxuries rate back to normal.

I consider the Pyramids to be a luxury, and instead rely upon "We Love the Consul" day under Republican gov't to drive early growth. Consequently, I consider the Colussus and the Hanging Gardens to be important early Wonders than the Pyramids.

I consider the Pyramids an important early wonder (and eventually important late as well

) not so much because of what it can do for me -- but maily because of what it can do in the hands of the AI.

Especially at higher levels, I've found that if a civ gets the Pyramids before me, that civ ends up being a huge pest when it's time to take them over. In Deity level, the AI does not have the same happiness issues that the player has, and they are able to grow relatively unchecked. The one caveat is that sometimes the Yellow civ (Spanish, Aztecs or Egyptians) gets the Pyramids and they won't use it as much for expansion.

Still, I like wonders that affect every city that I have and does not become obsolete. Add in the value of keeping it away from the AI and you can see why this is a highly coveted Wonder.

It depends what level you are playing on.

If you are playing on King level and below, I say the Pyramids are good and you'll usually have time to build at least two of the other early wonders as well. The early growth will not cause you too much unhappiness.

If you are playing on Emperor, as Kev says it might be worth building them to stop another Civ getting them.

At Deity level, especially if you're new to Deity, you might want to leave them alone unless you're experienced at coping with the rampant unhappiness at that level that quick growth brings. You should at least make happiness wonders a higher priority than pyramids.

(And in Civ I, building the pyramids means winning the game because they have the same effect as the Statue of Liberty in Civ II.)

Agreed. Allowing an opposing Civ to have the Pyramids gives them an edge. Same with Great Library, Sun Tzu's Academy and Leonardo's Workshop. (Maybe the AI in Civ3 can actually celebrate the "King's Day" and start taking advantage of the Colossus and the Republic!) When it comes to the Wonders, one of the best pieces of advice I've ever heard: "Don't build the Pyramids in the early game, but make sure you capture in the middle game." (Can't remember from which website I learned this jewel of wisdom; but I like his approach to Pyramids.!)

I always try to get pyramids...and the hanging gardens -deals with unhappy.

The other solution is simple...entertainers.

The irrigated grasslands provide the food...the entertainers keep the peace.

With the hanging gardens and pyramids you are going to do well.

At deity it is a ***** if the a.i gets both the pyramids and hanging gardens...and if they are far enough from you to avoid being whacked!

Like what Stormerne said: depends on your level. On cheiftain through king I think they are a must. However, on Emperor and Deity Oracle and hanging Gardens take precedance.

Pyramids are still valuable on higher levels, but not a priority. I like Pyramids because they are a never-ending wonder. Not only that, but they save you money and production since you don't have to pay upkeep on granaties or waste shields building granaries. They are also a source of income. When you take a city that has Granary, you can sell it off for 60 gold.
