It's one of the gaming franchises with the most fervently nostalgic fanbases, they just don't make games like that anymore. As the nostalgia and the gaping hole in the gaming market for a fun freeform creative, but deep, theme park rollercoaster extravaganza has widened ever bigger, finally a successor to this legendary series of games is in production. Several of them in fact.

First, developed by Frontier Developments famed for David Braben, the Elite series, and being the original creators of RCT3. Planet Coaster is being made by the original team as a spiritual successor to RCT3 and slated for release in Q4 2016.

Relatively little is known about it other than the E3 reveal trailer, but statements from the developers have emphasized that they will focus on the simulation and management aspects of gameplay. The trailer itself seems very.. Pixar-y.

Secondly, bearing the actual RCT name, developed by Nvizzio(who?) and published by Atari(they still do that?), RollerCoaster Tycoon World slated for release late 2015. It promises mod support and will be available in early access. Considering this with the close release and relatively little information released, I predict a premature release with lacking content. However not to be too negative, despite complaints over graphics and trailers, the latest news of the state of the game at PAX has been very good:

Smaller than the first two we have Theme Park Studio sporting Oculus Rift support for experiencing your coasters and a highly in-depth construction toolset, but limited in the whimsical art style of the others and also lacking in the management gameplay.

Then we have kickstarted indie project Parkitect, already out in alpha with a more minimalistic clean graphic style than the others.

And finally a shout-out to the rejuvination of one of the older games OpenRCT2 promises to keep RCT2 alive and well so it can grow into an even richer experience with time.

I think it will be interesting to see how these games end up being recieved, as with many sim games they have a slightly awkward target demographic that consists of both a broad mass appeal as well as a lot of hardcore fans that must both be pleased that can end up being difficult to acheive.

So which one do you think will end up as the true successor to the RollerCoaster Tycoon series?

Seems as though this might be an area paradox might want to have a nibble in. It seems right up their street.

On reputation alone im going to go with planet coaster. But in all honesty, i have absolutely no idea.

I'm really surprised there isn't more hype here for Planet Coaster. For a guy who played the heck out of RCT3 as a kid PC is a dream come true.

Planet Coaster is such a great game. I consider Planet Coaster as the true RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 (screw the obvious beta that is RollerCoaster Tycoon World).

In fact, RollerCoaster Tycoon creator Chris Sawyer endorsed Planet Coaster (it helps that Frontier is PC's developer).

I even requested the re-creation of the CiV Defeat Screen Statue in Planet Coaster: https://www.reddit.com/r/PlanetCoas...st_recreate_the_civilization_v_defeat_screen/
