The ranged units funnel

Mortars are the best plan for a modern ranged unit. To the person who said mortars are included in infantry units, that is a per army decision - and therefore is up to you to simulate ;)

Also, if snipers were included, the -20% combat strength is a little dumb imo... will get complicated and confusing. It would be much better to assign the sniper a relatively low ranged strength, but make it "pin down" units, making them unable to leave the square they occupy during their next turn.

FYI guys mobility doesn't fit in the ranged category, seeing as how it is a naval and melee promotion

Mobility I is available to ranged units after Bombardment I.

Mobility II is exclusive for navy units.

Since I plan on mainly playing England, its not really fair that longbows have no upgrade path, and I will want to be upgrading them to get two shots per turn, and 4 range.

Firstly longbows probably start off with the range promotion so they can't get it again.

Secondly bombardment is a promtion for naval units, so there both naval promotions in that case.

Personally I would've brought back Grenadiers for the Renaissance archer equivalent, and then drop the ranged unit count down to one in the industrial era due to the advent of flight. In the late game eras, I feel the siege dynamic shifts to the airforce, essentially making Artillery the new archer.

It seems to me that the longer ranged units you get in the modern era (Fighters, Bombers, Bombardment from ships) makes up for the drop off. If you watched the game over at Gamespot, the player spent a long time sending in bombers and ships to soften the heck out of the defenses, artillery as well, before finally sending in his infantry for mop up. So while most ranged is out, it seems that fighter/bomber and artillery and coordinated attacks from the sea are going to be huge anyways, so maybe it makes sense?

What is correct then, your link, or the civ V manual?

Longbows dont start with the range promotion, they have 3 base range like artillery, and can get 4 with range.

as long as corssbowmen can upgrade into cannons i see no problem with ranged unit options.

Other than the Ranged only promotions possibly not working on cannons either?

Bomabardment is a naval promotion, trust me, thats just a typo. They seem to have written naval as ranged on a whole bunch of promotions.

And no longbowmans have a base range of 2. they just start with range.

Edit - of course ranged promotions work for a cannon, its a ranged unit.

Gernadiers accually have less range than archers, and failed as soon as musket range for two volleys exceded the range for 1 throw.

Good idea tho, I'd perfer an Infantry gun/Abus gun, Horse Artillary/Falconet (nice name) or somthing else. Maybe they can lose their ranged attack when the era moves? But then they would be too limited. Maybe they can just have +1 range over infantry, not +2 of archers or +3 of Longbows?
