BUT,

do they merit it according to the Xennic rules of good civ picking?

just see my threrad on the subject, its in the (main) conquest forum

Ok, Mali by Xennic criteria
1. Not sure about the UU yet
2. Yep
3. Expansionist (considering how large it was) and Commercial
4. 3rd largest civ in the world at one time, most important Civ in West Africa at the time very rich (when a leader went to Mecca in 1324 he was so generous with his gold that it took 12 years for the Middle East economy to recover)
5. Definetly

I saw a preview on techTV's X-Play show. The Byzantines were on the civ selection screen.

Perhaps the unknown civ will have the same culture group as Americans, Aztecs, & Iroquois. Through PTW, those are the only three in that culture group. For comparison, the northern european one has Scandinavia, England, Russia, Germany, France, and Spain, the southern European one has Rome, Greece, Egypt, and Carthage, the middle eastern one has Ottomans, Persia, Arabia, Babylon, and Zululand, and the east asia one has India, Mongols, China, Korea, and Japan. The Celts belong to either the northern or southern european group, but since I haven't played as them, I don't know which one they are.

hmmmmm, it gives me hope for the future- though I have a feeling that your bull sh*tin' me....

Xen - Check civfanatic's front page. :)

Looks like we know what the remaining civ is!

Xen- why aren't overzealuos? the Byzantines are in. I would expect more celebration from you.

If he did, he'd be banned for excessive spam. ;)

I started my own thread in celibration of these wonderous event- a great cap on a great week for me :D

- the fights not over yet though, now I must ensure the use of Cataphracts!

I was just about to feel happy that the Byzantines were in when I noticed something that ruined it for me...

Empress Theodora??? EMPRESS THEODORA???

Who???? As opposed to Constantine, Justinian, Basielos II, Heraclius, and all those well known leaders... we get who??? Who's Empress Theodora? Maybe I'm just uninformed but I smell political correctness.

And why Sumeria, the Hitties, or the Dutch made it ahead of Mali or Ethiopia is anybody's guess.

Oh well. Congratulations Xen.

Yes, although I love that the Byzantines are in, they do indeed reek of the stentch of bad leader choice-

Joan I can understand
Eliz, everyone understands
Catharine most understand
and even Cleopatra is warranted in her own way

but Theodora dosent even begin to have barely a claim to being called Byzantiums greatest leader, ever.

did anything important happen during her rule though? Maybe she's just for the scenario.

I'll have to look into it, though it should be known that unlike Greece and Rome during the classical period or the Latin West during the Middle Ages, women actively participated in the intellectual life of the culture. While they could not attend schools, aristocratic women were often well-educated at home by tutors in literature, history, composition, and philosophy. The greatest of Byzantine writers, in fact, was the historian Anna Comnena, the daughter of the emperor Alexius. Her biography of her father is one of the greatest works of medieval historiography in existence—this includes the histories written in Europe I have heard. This gives some light to a female ruler, but not nearlly enough to Overturn guys like Justinian,Heraclius I , or Basil II

theodra was justinian's wife, she started as a lady of the evening. she was the power behind justinian, it was her that sent belisarius to crush the nike revolt ( justinian froze ) she played people behind the sences-she had her portege narse replace belisarius in italy when he got to popular. a real power hungary *****--they could of done better:(
