The Sims 2 | "Mencken" Legacy Challenge: Surrounded by Idiots (Participation Welcome)

Mencken Legacy 3.0: Off to Uni
---------------------------------------------------------
Time for a torchholder transition -- Barbara is our new heir!

clg1.jpg

My final order to Sophie is to Meditate. I'm hoping that will keep her out of trouble during her elder years.

clg2.jpg

I only have a day or so with Barbara as a teen, but she has to do some gardening in addition to getting her aspiration up and rounding off a couple of skills for scholarships.

clg3.jpg

Soon enough, though, she and Wolfbane arrive at mom's old dorm, where Aunt Katherine is still living as a junior.

clg4.jpg

 Oh, I'm afraid it's not going to get any better, kiddo.

clg5.jpg

Barbara is not a career- or knowledge-driven sim. With her aspiration being Pleasure, she has no driving goals at all, other than to have a good time. She would like to be a Celebrity Chef, though, and so while she's here I'll skill her in cooking. Other than that I'm trying to be more relaxed. Still, making friends is a priority.

clg6.jpg

Someone defriend you on facebook, Wolfie?

clg7.jpg

My game froze while Barbara was trying to meet new people, so I restarted...to see that once again, they'd arrived in color-matched clothes.

clg8.jpg

This time they found Katherine in a bit of a state.

clg9.jpg

Wolf discovered the allure of the exercise bike, losing his pudge in short order.

clg10.jpg

Another freeze, another restart, and --

...how do they DO that?

(I found the problem: whenever I tried to get Barbara to teleport in a particular Sim, the game would stop responding. I don't know WHY that is, but so long as I avoided clicking that sim everything was smooth.)

clg11.jpg

Katherine may be...socially maladjusted.

clg12.jpg

clg13.jpg

Just sayin'. I tried to keep track of how many times I saw her jump this poor woman, but not a day went by without several attacks.

clg14.jpg

Babs rolls wants for both Psychology and Drama. Since Sophie studied Psychology, I decided to let Barbara go with the other. Drama professors fall in love with all of their students, so it should be easy to befriend them.

clg15.jpg

Sure enough, as soon as the professor comes over she tries to make out with Barbara. (Never let a drama student hang around with their professor if the student is in a relationship with another student...unless you WANT tears, fireworks, and a broken relationship. :p)

clg16.jpg

Ouch! Unless she can get another Creativity point on her own, she won't make it out of uni. I decide to plonk down a piano upstairs and a guitar downstairs to give her that opportunity.

clg17.jpg

...it's almost sweet, the way these two dote on one another. Too bad their idea of attention includes assault and battery, not friendly chats and compliments.

clg18.jpg

Let her finish up in there first!

clg19.jpg

 Minutes later.

clg20.jpg

:D Attagirl, Katherine.

More to come!

clg21.jpg

I almost never choose the Pleasure aspiration on purpose, as it consists of nothing but tiny little wants that never add up to anything. Still, they do tend to want to go on dates, and dates are a surefire way of staying in platinum.

clg22.jpg

Looks like Katherine has made a new...friend.

clg23.jpg

clg24.jpg

You're a regular trio, like Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

(Maybe more like Germany, Russia, and Poland...)

clg25.jpg

Even between sending her neighbors to the nurse's station several times a day, Katherine found time to go to class and such. She survived probation!

clg26.jpg

She managed to get that creativity point. If Wolfbane here goes on probation, he'll have no excuse beyond being a lazy boob.

clg27.jpg

In addition to making friends, Barbara is also looking for some genes for the Mencken line. This fellow is alright, hairdo aside, but he's only a maid.

clg28.jpg

Amoya is the chick Katherine keeps attacking. She and Barbara get along fairly well. As for the old guy -- wait, old guy?

Hmm...that has possibility. He can make a couple of babies and then die without hanging around for too long...

clg29.jpg

Wha? How did HE pass? He never went to class!

clg30.jpg

Barbara invites the old fellow over. I er...I don't think I want this face in the Mencken house.

clg31.jpg

Some college-age girls invite guys into their bedrooms for FRIENDLY reasons. Katherine prefers beating the crap out of them.

clg32.jpg

And if they don't accept her invitation, by god she goes into THEIR room and gives them a proper beating there.

clg33.jpg

Not going to the final, eh Wolfie?

(Wolfbane does...nothing. Ever.)

clg34.jpg

clg35.jpg

Unless Katherine starts autonomously cooking (unlikely given the fact that the cafeteria lady is almost always present), she may not make it through...

clg36.jpg

:-/ Nothing I can do.

clg37.jpg

Barbara rolled this want. She's a good legacy-torchholder. :)

clg38.jpg

Not going to class?

clg39.jpg

Yeah, why bother when there's someone new to pick on?

clg40.jpg

:( And I was so hoping she'd prove that a Sim CAN survive uni on their own. She made it close, though! Only a semester shy...

clg41.jpg

Oh, boo hoo, Wolfbane. You deserve it. :p

clg42.jpg

 Yeah, why bother?

clg43.jpg

What are you, narcoleptic?!

clg44.jpg

...

clg45.jpg

...yeah, that was a quick semester.

Since university is going to be boring without Katherine around, and since Barbara has plenty of friends, I'm going to go ahead and push her through her final year. She creates Cum Laude, because she wasn't particularly motivated her first semester here.

clg46.jpg

After being thrown out, Wolfbane decides to..go into theatre or become a pirate, I'm not sure which.

clg47.jpg

She has the skills to be a Restraunteur! Why the lowly position? :(

clg48.jpg

As soon as she arrives home, she tops off her Creativity...

clg49.jpg

...and nearly kills herself playing with the trash compactor. Alas, this roused Sophie out of her meditative trance.

clg50.jpg

Douglas has been mostly useless, but he earns some points when he joined Barbara for a game of basketball.

clg51.jpg

Annnnnd so it starts.

clg52.jpg

Gumbo! Gumbo always works.

clg53.jpg

...except when it doesn't. She was demoted and sent home. I told her to take another job as a Prep Cook, where she was immediately promoted. So there, game. :p

clg54.jpg

Amanda kept her up the ENTIRE NIGHT doing this. It's not nearly as funny the fifth time around.

clg55.jpg

On her fifth day of adulthood, Barbara is promoted once again, and there I'll leave off. Next time...I suppose I should choose the least-mediocre of her options to marry. Perhaps I'll look for an Elder who isn't quite so hideous.

Question... why not Sims 3?

Some people prefer Sims 2. Same reason some people play older iterations of the Civilization series.

Some people prefer Sims 2. Same reason some people play older iterations of the Civilization series.

I get the decision to play Civ 3 over 4 and so on as they are similar games but with different systems of play. But when it comes to Sims, where graphics play a higher part and the ability to play with a whole neighbourhood just outstrips Sims 2 in every way.

Well, I've not played Sims 3, but the graphics difference between 2 and 3 isn't nearly as large as that between 1 and 2, and I was hesitant about the idea of having the whole neighbourhood playing while I focus on one family. Typically, myself and a few of my siblings would each run independent families in the neighbourhood, but wouldn't the Sims 3's system make that unworkable, or at least cause your family to spend unwanted time as NPCs while someone else is playing?

In Sims 3 each save file is an entire neighbourhood, and you can only play one family in that neighbourhood (while you can switch families, that results in the loss of your original family's aspiration points I believe, so in Iggy's situation it would not be workable, unless each sibling ran his or her own neighbourhood).

While I prefer Sims 3, I understand why you'd want to use Sims 2 for something like this, because there are more expansion packs out and so there's more stuff to do. (Also there are probably better player-made mods for Sims 2 as well because it's been around for longer.)

Question... why not Sims 3?

The Sims 3 is devilshly hard to patch. Version numbers are lengthy and region-specific, and even following careful advice I haven't yet managed to download one that will cooperate with my game. I only have the vanilla game, and it has a bug that I find makes the game almost unplayable...the clock doesn't work properly. That is, I can't speed up actions, so whenever they go to sleep I'm stuck staring at the screen for five or ten minutes. Also, I didn't adjust well to the "just play one household" style that Catharsis mentioned. I kept trying to switch and would get irritated when things happened in the other household. Eventually I'll get an expansion pack which will patch my vanilla game, and perhaps then I'll play more Sims3, because I do enjoy aspects of it...but really, Sims2 with its expansions and eight years of user-made content is as great a game as I could hope for.

I actually prefer the character graphics of the Sims 2. ;)

I have an update ready, and it ends with a call for names. I'll post it in a couple of hours, but there are any readers who want to go ahead and start submitting baby names, feel free.

Question... why not Sims 3?

I've been playing a lot of Sims 3. There aren't as many expansion packs, but I'm willing to bet there's at least as much to do. Switching families loses inactive families' current wishes, not achieved points, but unless you switch off story progression, they plod along as NPCs and can do things you don't want (like move out or quit their jobs). You can have multiple neighborhoods available as save files to avoid those issues. I think there are at least five EA neighborhoods available so far.

But why not Sims 3? I think the AI is significantly better. I've been neglecting a few family members and they haven't done much stupider than have dinner in the basement or go to school smelly. Much less funny, and the reason I haven't tried starting the ISBI concept.

I re-suggest my previous name suggestions. Wanda and Rocko.

...

I don't recall...

._.

Ok, which mod made the sims 2 game for you...A bit...Eh..."Censor"y?

I know, i meant the mod that makes smellin have to censor the picture.
