The Sizzle Factor

In my opinion Civ 4 takes a few steps forward and a few steps back. Overall it is about the same as older versions (for the time each one came out). The vision of the developers was far too shortsighted - the game could be way better. The civ franchise and gamers that play it deserve more.

For me getting an overall result as the older results it´s just amazing. It´s so easy to destroy a saga as Civilization that you have to admire how they have changed enought things leaving the core intact so new players and old players can be pleased.

For me most relevant issue of the game is that it´s designed for his comunity... lost´s of dedicated an fanatical modders are going to release incredible extra value packs... you cannot ask for more.

If you want an example of a saga going wrong, check out Master of Orion III. This is a good work and it can only improve with the time.

The original poster seems to nostalgic. I'm 47 years old. And with age comes wisdom. Leave the past to enter the future. What was is not what should be.

(... but I would like those Civ II advicers back...)

I guess we all just expected more of out the game will all the new features. Turns out that the features weren't all they were cracked up to be. They really dumbed down the game since Civ3, I was more exciting playing Civ3 then I was with this new one.

Jake, you're entitled to speak for yourself -- but not for me. :-) I'm pleased with Civ IV so far, despite a few graphical glitches and (on my sub-optimum system) slow performance.

I think there are others here who, while not classified as 100% ecstatic (with occasional uncontrollable outbreaks of glee), are pretty well satisfied. IMO "we all" is an overstatement.

But I do understand why you and others aren't pleased with the changes. I miss a lot of stuff from the previous version. Funny thing, though: each game I play makes me like Civ IV more. Dislike of the unfamiliar often (not always) diminishes when something ceases to be unfamiliar. Hope this is the case with you too. :-)

I didn't read all the posts but I tend to agree with you. Civ4 could have had tons more unique dialogues during diplomacy like in SMAC, but they didn't. Most of the time I forget what nationality I am in honestly.

But like you said, the gameplay is absolutely fantastic.
