Hello folks,
what do you think are Old World's strongest and weakest civs?
Rome and Persia are certainly contenders for the top spot. Rome's bonus training makes warmongering in a war-focused game a piece of cake, and their military family seat can pump out units extremely quickly. Persia's bonus orders from pastures essentially trivialises the orders aspect of the game, with a lucky start netting you easily 3+ orders very early on.
I always struggle with Assyria. They have no passive bonuses and rely on aggression to maximise their potential. If you aren't warring, they are completely generic. Hatti also seem weak, though that may be down to my inexperience in playing with them.
What do you think?

Kind regards,
Ita Bear

As i‘m playing only as Greece all the time, because for me a lot of fun is because of the identification with the nation i‘m playing, i can‘t really tell about the other nations. But i can say that how good the AI plays different nations, seem to depend on the map actually. On the Old World Map, Rome always has a strong army, but is nonetheless far behind in victory points, if i manage to take the vandals city sites quicker than Rome. Carthage is most of the time the most dangerous nation in regards to my victory. Assyria always is out of the game very soon. The Hittites are either very strong or very weak, there is no midway for them. Babylonia very rarely managed to take Carthage‘s part as nr.1 contender, but most of the time they are out very soon.

That‘s only a few observations, and if i‘m playing a different map, all can be very different. This is not what you asked for, i know, but maybe you can still get something out of it.

Obviously the answer is Greece, because they start with Drama! Instant win there.

On a more serious note, I play primarily as a peaceful builder, and Greece fits that beautifully. Cheaper settlers to win the early land grab, then a head start on culture in ALL of your cities. I’ve tried to make Babylon work in this role, but the slightly cheaper tech doesn’t seem to translate as well for me. I rather have an extra city on the way to Developing!

I've never played as anyone but Egypt. I tried Babylon once. I didn't have my starting pile of stone. So I thought I could manage and build some quarries but I couldn't do that either and I ragequit.

I'm finding Assyria incredibly powerful at higher difficulties. Being able to have a large army and actually use it is incredibly good. You can take out many many barb camps very fast with them.
