Alright, this 'hero' has been in FFH for some time.

Who builds it and what do you do with it?

The first time I built it, I sent it out to explore open territory - it was killed by the first barb unit it ran into, I think a Goblin.

I often rush to get Deception because I like to build the Council of Esus. I always build the Trojan Horse too as I am afraid the AI might know something I don't about its amazing capabilities and pull a nasty trick on me. After building it, I just let it sit.

To contemporize this, I built it again in my current game.

When the Counter 100 Culling came, I lost five of my six heroes.

I lost Gilden, Kithra, the Baron, Typhoid Mary, and Yvain.

Want to know which hero the game let me keep?

The Trojan Horse!

Bah, how did it figure THAT out?

OK, do you build it, and what on earth do you do with it?

Trojan Horse is worthless to my opinion. It might change in a later phase (shadow ??) but currently it's not worth building. The AI never built it in any game i played.

I tryed to put disciples in it to spread my religion, it doesn't work.

well i think that the point of the trojan horse is to secretly invade your enemies territory... just as the real on did. It allows you to load in units before hand and then get to the city/location/coast of your choice. After you've reached your destination you can safely declare war without the horse being sent back to the border.

Btw, i dont think the Trojan horse is a hero... doesn't have the hero promotion last time i checked.

About AI not building Trojan Horse, in my last game it was one of the few wonders (hero) AI built.
I haven't seen AI using it though.

Trojan Horse should be a nuke. :nuke:

I also saw the AI build the Trojan Horse once, but didn't seem to do anything with it.

I built it in one game, figuring it would be a relatively safe way to move some ground troops into enemy territory. Instead, an enemy shadow attacked and destroyed it in a single attack, and I lost the four melee units I'd loaded into it. So a pretty useless unit, I agree.

Also, if you have a unit with Hidden Nationality in it, it can still be attacked. It's not protected/hidden or anything....

The situation that I find it useful so far is when I have land which are splitted by an AI who refuse to sign Open Borders with me and I need to move troops between my land.

duh

you put CATAPULTS into it, park it next to an enemy city, when you declare war, those slow moving catapults are RIGHT THERE ready to reduce the city, while your fast moving units move up to defend the stack

or, failing that, you put SPARTS into it, don't bother upgrading them with +1 movement, and thus you start the first round of war with sparts right on top of your first targetted city

at the onset of war, it allows you to drop units right on top of an enemy city, as close to a Trojan Horse effect without actually putting your units inside

The best use of the Trojan Horse is with missionaries. With it, you can spread your religion to all of your enemies on the same continent. Shame it can't cross water, though...

No you can't. I tryed it, see my post above!
You can't sacrifice missionaries while they are inside the horse, and you can't unload them if you don't have open-border. if you have OB you don't need the horse in the first place!

It's only useful if a civ without OB stands between you and a civ you have OB with!

Since any civ can (and will) freely attack a Hidden Nationality unit without repercussions, the HN promotion on the Trojan Horse doesn't accomplish what is intended. Why not, instead, make the Trojan Horse an invisible transport? That would make it much more useful for sneaking into enemy territory.

I thought that the Trojan horse didn't have HN, rather it had the ability to travel in rival territory without OB. (open borders)

yea thats right... according to the FFHpedia (last time i checked)

Usually, you cannot build the Trojan Horse until mid-game (I use Marathon setting). By then, I find a couple of Lizardmen or Orc Axemen barbs can easily take it out. Of course, I suppose if you saw the barbs coming, you could disembark your troops and attack them.

But, if you get attacked by the barb when you are in a civ without an OB agreement and disembark, I guess it would cause a war.

And, yes, perhaps not realistically, it is listed as a Hero Unit in the civlopedia and apparently counts as one when the counter hits 100. :(

I've always found that the purpose of the Trojan horse is to ferry units across the neutral territory of any civ that won't give you an open boarder agreement so that you can actually fight those with whom you are at war. I've only used it 2 or 3 times

has anybody else tried using the Trojan Horse like I do?

you guys make it sound like it's useless, but i beeline for it, it gives a huge bonus for the first turn of war

don't use it to explore, park it outside a city, full of catapults or city-sackers, declare war, then unpack the troops

the declaration will not push it outside the culture border, nor the troops inside

I like your strategy and may try it in the future, however, IMO, the difficult thing is getting it from point A to point B without it getting killed by a barb unit, for example. Then, in addition to losing the White Elephant, I mean Trojan Horse, you lost the units inside as well.

i think the trojan horse needs improvement... I built it and I wanted to send some mercenaries inside of it to pillage the territory of an undeclared enemy... but in the way the units were all atatcked and destroyed even if they were inside the horse... they killed all the units with hidden nationality and left the horse empty :(

it would be cool if the units inside the horse could be safe... otherwise it sucks!
