Chapter 1 ---

For centuries, the Tokugawa family led Japan. They initially shared the eastern continent with the Chinese, but after centuries of war, the continent was finally under a single banner: the rising sun. After these troubled times, the Japanese culture prospered quickly as massive investment was made in cities infrastructure. Many libraries, marketplaces, banks, universities, temples and cathedrals were built during this time. The Japanese ruled their piece of land in peace and prosperity.

Or so they thought. One day, they made contact with people from a distant land: the Iroquois. Relationships were good from the start and a Japanese embassy was created in the capital of this strange culture: Salamanca. Shortly after, more gaijin (aka foreigners) came and this how Japan met the Americans, Iroquois and the Russians.

This is when it became obvious that Japan had been too slow to explore the vast world, and its science had suffered from this. They were backward people compared to these cultures. The core of the Japanese army consisted of Samurai and musketmen. These culture possessed knowledge of incredible wonders such as cavalry units and riflemen !!! This was a turning point for Japan, the destiny of its people would reveal itself soon.

This is where our story begins.

Chapter 2 ---

Tokugawa awoke as soon as the sun rose. "The air feels great this morning!" he said. "A good day to train. Bring me sensei Hirohito." The servant slowly nodded, and backed away from the room without a sound, careful not to show his back to his emperor. A grave insult with dire consequences.

"You called for me, lord Tokugawa"

"Ah Hirohito! How are you my friend! Please come, come. Let's start our lesson."

"I sense an unusual amount of excitement in you this morning, my lord. Something going on in your mind?"

"Always the mind reader. You amaze me every day. Yes, you are right. I am excited. You see, I've read some reports recently from our agents in Salamanca. These Iroquois people are fascinating. They have access to vast knowledge that we can only dream of here. With this, we can start to study new fields of science and move our culture forward to new heights."

"I see. And what will we gain from this? Changes go both ways, some good, some bad. It is very hard to see where this will lead us. Caution is required."

"I know, I know. I can see why father loved you so much. Always watching on my shoulder. Anyway, shall we begin?"

"I think this morning class has already begun, my lord. In more ways than you think. But yes, you are right. Let us begin your fencing lesson."

In one swift motion, sensei Hirohito launched forward a lightning quick thrust with his katana (sword), the deadliest of all Japanese weapon. Tokugawa was nearly caught off guard but this move, but years of training with his old master had taught him never to be caught completely unaware. Never trust anyone completely. A quick side step and a sharp upward movement with his katana was all that was needed to deflect the blow.

"Well done, my lord. A well executed parry..."

Tokugawa didn't let Hirohito finish his sentence, he immediately attacked. The two of them exchanged a couple of strikes. None of them made contact. No one would risk too much of an opening in their defense to try a decisive attack. Signs of respect but also recognition of the skills of the opponent. Japanese fencing was an art of decisive attack, not of long exchange of thrust and parry. A sharp contrast to the fencing method of other culture. In the end, it was a draw.

"Well done. Your right parry has improved a lot." said sensei Hirohito. "You clearly block the angle and at the same time set yourself perfectly for a counter move. Very good. Very good."

Tokugawa only smiled at the remark, and bowed slightly toward his teacher. One would never answer back to such a compliment. Silence and humility showed his understanding. No need for words in this moment.

Later that day, Tokugawa returned to his desk, to study the reports from Salamanca. Cavalry! Who would have thought to mount soldier with rifle? Clearly, these foreigners were not to be underestimated. Their research in science was clearly superior to theirs, and the advantage these culture had would clearly increase if nothing was done.

"Send for my ministers. I want an audience setup in the next hour."

Chapter 3 ---

The audience chamber was a rectangular room. The floor was covered with tatami mats. The walls were empty, the only decoration: Japanese paintings made directly on the walls, not on canvas. There was no furniture in the room, except for small benches less than 6 inches from the floor. The northern part of the room was slightly elevated than the southern part, as if there was a step to get to that area. This is where Tokugawa was sitting. The main entrance to the room was in the southern part of the room. Upon entering the room, a guest would immediately see Tokugawa and how taller than everyone else he is the room. A clear indication of status.

"I have called upon you because we need to discuss important matters. I recently received information about the gaijin we recently met: the Americans, the Azteqs, the Iroquois and the Russians. These cultures are rich and diverse. They have produced a lot of knowledge in various areas, knowledge that we do not have." Tokugawa took a pause, so that his ministers could clearly understands the gravity of his words. It worked perfectly, they all showed subtle signs of worry. To the untrained eyes, nothing could be seen on their face, but Tokugawana was no novice and he could read emotion very well from all of them.

One of the ministers then said, "But lord, how is this possible? Japan has never been so rich and prosper. We've been investing in all our cities for decades. How could they?"

"But they did, and that's a fact. You see, these people share knowledge between themselves easily, and they all benefited from this. Who knows for how long they've been doing this. Japan has been on its own for centuries, without any contact with any other culture. Only a few travelers here and there." Tokugawa then took a deep breath, "It is time for us to do the same. I want us to set a city on the their continent."

The ministers all looked at their emperor with awe. "You mean, Japanese citizens living abroad, amongst the barbarians. Unthinkable! I've heard stories about the Russians and their family reunion..."

"But we don't have a choice !!!" Tokugawa interrupted. "Our very survival is at stake. You see, we have to evolve or become part of history books, like the Chinese. Don't you remember what happened to them? What we did to them?"

The minister was quick to bow his head before saying "My lord, I don't question the wisdom of your words, I merely state facts. Who would want to be part of such a future in a land full of barbarians without manners."

"Only our very best. This city won't be an ordinary colony. We will establish a massive military presence there, to ensure that our citizens come to no peril. I will send at least 10 divisions of our musketmen. This shall make them think twice before they attack us. We will also spare no expenses to accelerate the building of basic infrastructure there, like temples for our gods and fortifications to defend it."

A mumble of approval ran through the ministers.

"From now on, we move forward! Most of our economy will be diverted for this project. All borders cities are to continue their investment in infrastructure, but mainland cities are to switch immediately to military units. Also, our 3 major coastal cities shall build harbor. We need to start building a massive fleet with experienced crewmembers."

Chapter 4 ---

Meanwhile in a distant land, in a city called Moscow, a similar meeting was taking place.

Catherine was the current ruler of Russia. Russians were the strongest of the 4 nations on the western continent. But it wasn't enough. Catherine wanted more, and she knew she could get it. All her life, she wanted power and she was able to become czarine by subterfuge, blackmail, intimidation, and even murder. She got away with it. As soon as she became czarine, she made sure to destroy all the evidence against her and her dark past. When you make the law, you can always bend it to your favor.

The Russian army was powerful and the country was rich with resources. Not powerful enough for Catherine. She had made deals with many industrialists. They would upgrade their current production centers to produce military units: Cossaq and riflemen. In exchange, she promised that the central government would buy these units with a premium. It was a win-win situation. The industrialists would make a ton of money; Catherine would have her army to realize her conquest dreams.

Now, she just had to make sure her ministers and the rest of the political staff would follow her lead.

“Gentlemen, today is a great day for the motherland! We will finally fulfill our destiny! I recently made arrangement with the production centers and we shall have the army we deserve.” Catherine said.

“Excuse me my lady, but why do we need an army? Our current defense force are sufficient,” asked minister Larionov. He was minister of the interior. He saw to all internal affairs of Russia. He was a devoted man to his country. He always made sure that sufficient resources were allocated to city infrastructures that would make the citizens happy and under the control of the central government.

Catherine was ready for his interruption. She knew he would be reluctant to her plans. In his mind, any money that is not spent on improving our cities is wasted. He might be shortsighted, but he is useful thought Catherine.

“Why? To enforce our borders, Larionov. We’ve been far too passive for far too long. Yes, we have the biggest territory on this continent, but for how long? Do you think the Americans will stay put forever? They’re expansionist Larionov!!! Do you know what this means? She yelled

“But of course, they want to expand their border and increase their share of land. Just like us.” Larionov answered.

“And where do you think they’ll go when they want to achieve such a goal? We cover all of their western borders. The sea blocks them from any expansion to the east and south. If they want land, they’ll have to take it away from us. I will not let this happens to the motherland.”

“But we haven’t seen any reports showing that they are increasing their military buildup.”

“And when we do see this report, what we will do?” asked Catherine. “React to it and start building our own forces? This is not the Russian way. We know the Americans will eventually go this path. We should take the initiative and build our forces now, and attack them unprepared!”

“Yes! I totally agree with lady Catherine,” said general Stalin. He was chief of staff of the Russian armed force. Always an ally when war is imminent thought Catherine. “This is how Russia became the great power it is today: taking the initiative and attacking first. History has taught us this already.” Stalin declared proudly.

A rumble of approval was now going through the room. Larionov had no choice but to keep silent. He knew he wouldn’t get much support from the other ministers now; Catherine had too much influence over them and he she had obviously prepared herself well for this meeting. His best option now was to make sure he wouldn’t be left out of what was to come next.

Larionov then ask to speak. “Czarine Catherine, you are right. The Americans do represent a possible threat to us and we should move first. How much troops should we commit to this campaign? We currently have about 20 divisions of infantry and about the same in Cossaqs, our elite cavalry. Obviously, we can’t commit too much of our forces to this campaign, this would weaken our border with the Azteqs and Iroquois. Who knows how they would react?”

“Well said” announced Catherine. “I actually made some arrangements with the Iroquois and the Azteqs. They will remain neutral for now, if we move fast enough, and use our propaganda press well. This campaign will be a short one. I already made arrangement with our production centers and we shall have 10 new divisions of Cossaqs by the end of the month, for the next 6 months. This should be sufficient for us to take New York and Chicago, their two closest and biggest cities. If this phase of the campaign goes well, Washington will be within our reach fast, along with Boston and San Francisco. Once we have the Americans capital, their whole economy and leadership will be in ruin and we won’ t have anything to fear from them.

All the ministers were now astonished. How was she able to organize all of this without them being aware of it? Obviously, she had her own people through all the branches of the government and she could bypass them anytime. A lot of them now realized that they were merely political figures and she didn’t need them at all. This made them very uneasy about their future. They all heard the stories about what she did to people she didn’t need…

“General Stalin” she said. “You have two weeks to prepare your battle plans. Get the troops to combat readiness and move them into position. I will not allow us to miss this opportunity. Get moving!” With that, she exited the room, a grin on her face. All was going according to plan.

Chapter 5 ---

The campaign against the Americans went very well for the Russians. Despite the plea for help, the Azteqs and Iroquois remained neutral in the beginning of the conflict. Catherine had done her work well and it had cost her dearly in gold and technology, but it was worth it. The Russians now occupied all of the southern Americans cities, and the Americans only had a few cities left in the north. Seeing this opportunity, the Iroquois moved in and grab what they could before Russian troops moved in. The Americans were no more. Russians was now a major civilization to be dealt with. They were ahead in technology; they had the most cities, and were 2nd in territory and in culture, just behind the Japanese.

During that time, many American cities were razed and it left part of the southeastern land unclaimed on the western continent.

In the imperial palace in Kyoto, an agent brings news to his emperor.

“Lord Tokugawa” said the agent. “I just received news from our agents overseas. Here is the latest map of the western continent. As you can see, the Russians campaign went very well, they occupy all the southern American cities. They also occupied a few of them in the north and the rest was grabbed by the Iroquois.”

“Interesting. There is a patch of land now unclaimed in the southeastern part of the continent. This is the opportunity we were waiting for. This is a perfect spot for our colony. Get me the admiral of the fleet. They need to get moving now.” Tokugawa said. He then stormed out of the audience and went directly to see Hirohito, General of the Army.

“Hirohito, I just received news from abroad. We have an opportunity to grab some land on the western continent. Get your troops ready, you’re sailing out by the end of the week.”

“Yes lord. I shall not fail you,” answered Hirohito followed by a quick bow. He then turned to one of his aide, “Get me my armor and call the senior staff. We have an operation to prepare.”

The Japanese fleet consisted of 2 galleon groups and no escort. The current Japanese technology didn’t allow building efficient warships, so no resources were used on them. Instead, high hopes ran on the scientists, who promised new advances with the knowledge of steam power. With this, they could build a fleet of ironclads, a powerful warship covered in iron and moving without sails! The fleet of galleon carried settlers, 5 divisions of musketmen and 2 samurai divisions.

The samurais were very excited about this campaign. This was their first operation in enemy territory since the formation of the unit. They were available late during the war against the Chinese but the emperor then choose to keep them as a defensive unit instead. The armies of swordmen and mounted warrior were sufficient to deal with the Chinese. The Japanese population was disapointed by this decision, but they respected it. It was thought initially that the samurai units were only to be used as a defensive force, especially for the Kyoto area. Kyoto is the central nerve of the Japanese culture. As the unit evolved, it became apparent that samurais were as effective offensively as defensively. Now, they are being put to the test.
