In Germany, it is considered suicidal to be a sailor. ;)

The Great Library was completed in Berlin!

Germany gained no less than SIX new technologies, after sailing the coasts of the new continent, and meeting Zulus, English and Romans.

Berlin is now working on the Hanging Gardens, and will probably beat Persia, the first to start them, by at least 100 years!

I feel silly for being so pessimistic in the beginning. I overestimated the AI.

We will explore this vast world in earnest. Theres 7 more tribes out there somewhere.

The discovery of Currency has pushed us into a new age of prosperity.
The lack of luxuries does hurt a little.
The Sistine Chapel is our goal now. It is imperative.

When I started my first game on Regent, I selected huge map, 16 civs, pangaea and I was playing as the Russians.

At first I thought "what a brilliant location" - my starting position was on grassland, with a river, hills nearby, incense luxury - paradise in short!

I sent my scout to investigate the continent ( ) and find new civs but... It turned out that apart from that nice starting location I was on a small island full of tundra and mountains!

I played on, but was only able to get 5 cities on the island at decent locations. The island was completely surrounded by oceans and I lost a number of galleys trying to cross the oceans.

Every single wonder which I started was finished ahead of me by some AI civs.

At that point I decided to 'retire' in order to see the world map and find out where the other civs are.

It turned out that somewhere there is a huge continent (pangaea) with 14 civs on it and next to it is a small continent with the Romans and then far, far away from it is my island. So at that point I decided to quit that game and started a new one. :(

Note: the bigger civs on the continent had up to 30 cities by then, so I had no chance...

goodie luckie!!

:king: German Monarchy established. :king:

Now, we await the construction of The Art of War, to catapult Germany into a Golden Age! Which ofcourse, will be quickly followed by the founding of the German Republic. :D

Those tribes across the pond dont stand a snowballs chance in hell! :satan:

Wow! I love starting on an island now!

More exploring to find luxuries is underway. That is still a sore spot. I dont seem to recall EVER starting without a single luxury. Oh well, adapt and overcome, I always say.

Thanks for all the encouragement and stories. Fun reading!

I'll keep updating this thread if anyone is interested in how this turns out. :D

One quick war with the Zulus netted an Ivory city.

Second war with Zulu (damn, they are aggressive!) raging.

Quick war with Rome (I didnt start any of these, honest!), I captured one of their cities and gave it to Persia. Peace signed.

England and Persia are my friends, Zulu and Rome are not.;)

Captured New Zimbabwe and gave it to England.
Gave the English chivalry, they are lagging behind in science.

I just finished Economics, researching Invention.

Need galleons to find the other 6 tribes.

joespaniel:

You actually have a pretty good gig going on there! I've read a lot of your posts, so I know that you are a talented player, and as it looks now I think that you have a major upper hand in this game!

You could probably build a bunch of knights and wreak some havok on that mainland with Persia, Rome, et al. With your militaristic bent, you'd probably get a Leader pretty quickly, and building a Forbidden Palace on that mainland will likely ensure Germany's dominance.

The only chance you'll probably have of having major difficulties will be if some of the missing civs have had a chance to pull away technologically or something, but heck, when you get some Panzers online you can bash them around as well!

Looks like you'll have some great fun! Enjoy!

Thats just it:

I DONT want a conquest victory. I want to go for culture, or other peacefull victory.

Zululand and Rome are making it really hard, with their extortion tactics. I just cant give in when I know Im stronger!

Im "helping" Persia and England to defeat them, but so far its not working. Zulu and Rome have huge armies. I have to get down and dirty now. Lots of knight production on the Teutonic Isle, some very large and bloody battles will be coming shortly.

If Barbarossa shows up, he will be forming an army, not building a palace. I think.

I already noticed that Persia would be the best spot for a new empire. But I dont want it.

Anyway, current projects include Adam Smith's, Wall Street and soon Leonardo's. My plan: to try and build every Great Wonder before the AI does. We'll see...

Traded Japan ivory and mathmatics for spice. They are a joke.
FYI - Japan has 8 spice tiles on their little island.

Next big concern: saltpeter, will we have any?

I just wan't to add one thing that you look like you are in a spot for some of those good hard to get rare resorces.
Ex:Iron, Uranium, oil, Saltpetter.
One thing Iv'e noticed in games is that (mine at least) is that the civs that don't get many luxary resorces seem to get more stratigic resorces.

We finally found the other continent.
Egypt, America, France, India, Iroquois and Aztecs.

Oh, do I hear a challenge here? :p :D

Seriously, is there MP coming? I had thought it would come with the exp pack or something, along with the scenario editor. But can't play anyway, sloooooow 56k modem connection at home. :(

Why do all of those cities have the Civs name in brackets after the city name?

Cast your vote! What would you do?
I started a new SP game, with 12 civs on a large map.

Continents, 70% water, temperate, Regent level.

Initialy, the starting positon looked rough, with so many mountains. But with rivers and grassland, it was workable.

I built lots of warriors to explore, and after awhile it started to dawn on me I was alone on an island! The horror!

I feel like a castaway!

Now, here's the best part: NO LUXURIES! :suicide:

Personally, I like islands, since you don't have to worry about attacking civs early on in the game. In Civ 2, I liked playing the Aztecs, with no American or Souix civs, and knowing that the English liked to settle in NA made me cover that area first. Afterwards, everything was a sinch!

Im going to play it out, but this may be my first ever loss to the AI, we'll see...

Ok, I think you can tell by my username that I'm surprised. :) My success ratio is more like 25%, and that's on Chieftain mode! The only time I *didn't* try to compete (in Civ 2), and went for an "Isolationist Civ" was with India (on a real world), and ended up in a stalemated (300 year) cold-war with persistant Viking Fanatics. :) (And with my allies safe and secure in NA and SA.)
