The Vanguard

I'm sure that for a race such as the Gen'Shar, a fear of bunnies is as common as a fear of heights or spiders is to us pitiful humans. :p

I would think a fear of losing or failure would be their worst terror.

Kind of like waking up one morning without your .. .. .. .. ..

Most Gen'Shar probably fear nothing, except perhaps dying by accident rather than in combat. For Drasha, admitting that she is afraid and knowing that someone else knows it is probably painfully embarrassing and shameful.

Gen'Shar are much cooler, but they remind me of the bad guys from Chronicles of Riddick and the Sith from Star Wars' KOTOR video game. Does anyone think that a society based on advancement by killing your superiors is in any way viable?

In Soviet Russia, Superior kills YOU!

:crazyeye:

I guess a society like that could work, but it would be a society of basically a bunch of indivduals working together purely for personal gain. eventually it would get to the point where everything would have a purpose, and if your in a position of power you would have to constantly look behind your back for your foes, and to your front for supposed 'allies'. just my put.

Many parallels with the worst totalitarian governments in history except far worse because there would be no need to wisk detractors away in the dead of night or trump up false accusations, you could just walk up and shoot them in plain sight.

It's only chance would be if the populace had a genuine commitment to a common goal. It would certainly be a rare organization but anyone who could be successful under such a system would most certainly be the toughest, baldest most ruthless person ever.

Why would he/she be bald? ;)

Because my spellchecker has no street cred and doesn't recognise "baddest" as a word.

So turn it off...

No. Most, to some degree, work together for a common goal. Every major government is like that. But what I mean is there would be no common goal, except for on rare occasions. They would probably spend a huge amount of time concentrating on how they could raise their own position, and not try and help the community at large. Basically, order would be a tough thinmg to maintain, and mostly the only thing that would keep such a society going is it's military.

Nevermind, let's just get back to the story, so no one else is confused.

And again, isn't that what all societies are? Furthermore, isn't that basic human nature. Isn't survival/personal gain a common goal. I doubt you could name a human society that isn't like the one outlined in this story.

Societies might be, but the individuals in them don't. Most people seem to be only interested in getting more money irregardless if it helps or hurts society.

 You sound like you're supporting me.

I also thought what Marsden said made little to no sense.

Back to the original question ... I am also reminded a little of the Klingons
in ST:TNG. There was one episode where Riker had a posting to a Klingon
bird-of-prey, and killed (or rather, appeared to kill) the captain in order
to take command. In that series/society, killing was not unprecedented,
but not commonplace, either.

I think that such a society would have to have some sort of limits imposed
on when/how such killing took place. Duels, perhaps? The superiors would
also probably use lethal force to enforce discipline on disobedient underlings.
In order to progress up the tech tree (to use a Civ analogy), citizens
would have to take breaks from killing one's superiors, and actually get
work done! Some sort of balance would need to be struck for the
society to be viable.
