Makes sense but they were still at a classical level of development (thanks Adam!) compared to the civs they were pillaging until they settled in Ireland and Russia around 1000 AD.

They never had a classical era, and the civs they where pillaging (not including the ventures to the mediterranean sea) also fell back into barbarism (dark ages).

They are the equivalent of the AI which, thanks to a lousy starting position is still trying to catch up in tech

I was explaining it the easy way. And you must admit that the vikings did not have a classical era.

My highest ever score (212K, domination) was done with the dutch; the financial trait was needed to finance my huge army while creative helped with border expansions.

The map was 'great plains' so the UU was never needed; in fact I never built a dyke as the game finished before I got the tech for it.
