The Witcher

Yes, its quite a fun game with a more mature theme (at least more so than most games). It has memorable characters, a medium medieval fantasy setting and plenty of sex :D

Considering its quite cheap now ($19.99 and often goes on sale for half that) its a good buy. The combat isn't amazing and you have to time your clicks right but I like watching swordplay.

I second Prince's comments. Very fun, as long as you don't mind a gaming manual the size of a small book. It's got enough complexity without spilling over into frustration. The combat is interesting and different but nothing spectacular. To top it all off the story is much more compelling than your standard fantasy setting "There be daemons!"

I don't remember the manual being that large. If you want a small book, look at Civ2's manual. You'll never see anything that large ever again.

I should finish the Witcher. It had an interesting story, I'm not sure why I never finished it. Some parts seemed tedious to me, however. And that's one reason. The combat is another thing I didn't care for.

I'd get the Uncut version. The North American version has nudity cut out. It's a fairly simple patch.

The pacing is slightly off in many places, can make parts of the story a bit of a slog IMO.
Still totally worth whatever budget price its out at these days though.

The Witcher is a terrible game. It's the single-player version of an MMORPG system. Boring.

Did you actually play it or are you basing that off of Zero Punctuation? While the combat isn't far off from an MMO, it doesn't have a skill bar and the timed clicking is a little bit more complex than autotargetting an enemy. The Dragon Age games have combat that is a lot closer to MMORPGs.

The Witcher's combat isn't amazing, but it was passable and not only major part of the game.

System requirements for the Witcher 2 have been released (EDIT: This is according to some gaming website I forget)

Memory: 3 GB for Windows XP / 4 GB for Windows Vista and Windows 7
Hard Disk: At least 16 GB of free space

Minimum specs

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz or AMD equivalent

With people always complaining about combat in The Witcher - give me an example of a similar game with good combat! What are they?

Baldur's Gate 2 (and 1), Dragon Age.

Dragon Age didn't have "great" combat. What made it good was the compelling dialogue and characters, which was not present in the Witcher.

So basically you don't like being in direct control of a character.

Which was the case for neither of the games mentioned.

... Your sentence is confusing me. Yes, it's the case that he's not in direct control in either of these games.

There's auto-pilot for your companions but it's far better to micromanage them. Only on the easiest difficulties is it acceptable to not be in direct control over your party.

I see what you mean. It's not what I meant though by "direct control". Maybe it wasn't the best expression, but I meant that The Witcher is more like... At all time you walk around with ASDW in combat, every click is an attack, there are some parry moves and such. That's opposed to a more MMORPG style control where you just click on actions that are performed more passively by your character(s).

Mount&Blade, Lugaru, Dark Messiah Might & Magic.

Baldur's Gate 2 (and 1), Dragon Age.
I'm guessing you never played The Witcher or Mount&Blade or were utterly unable to figure out either combat system. Baldur's Gate's combat is pretty simplistic and Dragon Age's is quite similar to the average MMORPG. Neither is awful but neither is amazing either. The Witcher's combat isn't great but it isn't any worse.

Requirements are starting to be high on processors. My processor is an old Q6600 or whatever it was (duo 2 core, I think you have the same Princescamp), but I'm always well over the requirements in terms of GPU and RAM.
Yeah I still have my Q6600 and I am NOT worried about replacing it until at least next year. I've had zero issues with running out of space (except for Minecraft of all things having the odd fit, I swear it must be epileptic). The Witcher 2 is very beautiful :D and should be less linear more multipath with improvements to the combat.

EDIT: Update to the system reqs (which I had grabbed off some gaming website), these are the ones from the developer's newsletter:

Minimum Requirements:

Processor: Core 2Duo 2.2 GHz or dual core AMD 2.5 GHz
RAM: 1GB Win XP/ 2GB Vista/7
Graphics: GeForce 8800 512MB or Radeon (HD3850 512 MB)
HDD Space: 16 GB

Recommended Requirements:

Processor: Quad Core Intel or AMD
RAM: 3GB Win XP/ 4GB Vista/7
Graphics: GeForce 260 1GB or (HD4850 1GB)
HDD Space: 16 GB
Glad I meet the recommended specs :D And that at least one game is finally moving forward again and not tied down to the consoles outdated hardware.

What? Neither Baldur's Gate nor Dragon Age are MMORPGs, but World of Warcraft is, and that's controlled by ASDW.
