the WORST optionnal tech

I`d say ironclads, too.
And that is actually very good, because it means that sailships are used longer than 10 turns now.

Stealth, comes too late, plus you're already sitting pretty with a good number of bombers

Looking for an optional tech that's not just useless but actively *bad*. Best I can come up with is democracy, in a 20K game. Would make getting to Free Artistry and Shakespeare's so much easier if that useless government weren't in the way.

Advanced Flight, Amphibiuos Warfare (CivIII)
What can you do with a 8 attack unit, if you have a 16 one?

Capture that annoying one square island city due to amphibious assault.
And you haven't to face some defence bonus.
But AF is the worst tech (3 times for now)

Especially since Free Artistry and Democracy were both back in the Golden Age of Greece, with Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, the first deus ex machina, the Athenian democracy and empire, and too many philosophers to count

I'd have to say Music Theory, Free Artistry, and Fascism in an amazing three-way tie, because you can capture Bach's and Shakespeare's, and Fascism as a government is for people with a weak civ in the industrial age, which is sad.

EDIT: Crosspost!

Ironclads - they were useless in vanilla with Steam Power

and now I have to research them.....forget it

I thought you needed printing press to exchange maps with other civs.

In C3C printing press is for contacts and Navigation is for maps.

I would say ironclads is worse than advanced flight, since at least advanced flight allows you to build radar towers.

Ironclads, definitely - unless I desperately needed to research something to trade around.

Ironclads. Advanced flight is not that useless. I really used some helicopters and paratroopers as invasion force after bombers wasted some cities.

Music Theory is worthy to research, if your'e in need for happy faces and there are only a few lux resources..

You RESEARCH and USE advanced flight????? It wasn't too bad in civ2, I think, but now it is useless. I only research it once, in my first game on warlord, and I didn't used those crapy paratroops. And MT is for culture mainly, important for cultural victories (100K or 20K).

I'd say Ironclads, by far.

Sea power isn't as important in this game as it could be, compounded by the fact that the AI has almost no sea warfare strategy. Hence, you simply can pass on ironclads and wait for the real warships to arrive on the scene.

Advanced Flight isn't that bad. Helicopters and (to a lesser extent) paratroopers can provide some real flexibility. And at this point in the game, cash shouldn't be a problem so spending a few gpt on unit maintenance for several helicopter and paratrooper units shouldn't hurt my finances. They can provide me some situational strategic options behind enemy lines.

Similar to my liberal use of bombard units, I simply don't like to fight as the AI do in wars. Going beyond enemy tactics (admittedly, in the case of the AI, it's not saying much), flanking them, and crippling their production are the human advantage against the the AI production and other advantages at higher levels. I'd only be handicaping myself if I just dismiss these units.

Having said that, I typically go for a few modern age techs first before going back to get or trade for advanced flight. I said the tech's not bad, just not among the more important ones. :)

Gotta be free artistry for me - never research it, never bother buying it off rivals, never bother building the one useless thing you get to do from it - Shakespeare's.

Didn't you get Bomber with Adv. Flight in Civ2. It was quite more useful thann ow.

Ironclads, so reatrded, but free artistry is good, shakespears theater has your city grow beyond 12, i normally have sucky starts, my last one whas desert between two rivers. kinda like mesopotamia, but the rivers were far away
