the WORST optionnal tech

Democracy stinks. By the time you actually get to implement it, Republic works out fine and you probably can't afford the 1000s of turns in anarchy it throws you into. (Why you need a period of extreme violence to enter the most peaceable goverment there is is a mystery to me anyway)

Didn't you get Bomber with Adv. Flight in Civ2. It was quite more useful thann ow.
You may be right, I didn't civ 2 for a while, and I rememberd once I used paratroopers to take ennemy cities when I couldn't use my first wave to take it. I'll check the tech tree. EDIT You are absolutly right Adv flight was really useful, with bombers. Thanks. Now, it is worthless

Ironclads is without a doubt the most useless tech. Why would I want to build ironclads when destroyers are only a few techs away? By the time the first one slides down the ways, it's already obsolete. I suppose if the minimum research time were much, much longer they might be of use.

Advanced Flight. I haven't even researched it since I played Chieftain.

OK, this thread is becoming to serious. Hello!!!, it wasn't to be! Advanced flight is the worst in vanilla and ironcald in C3C (I don't have it, but if you want to give me yours ...) seems to be real bad.

The true worst tech (optional or not) is the one you research at 1.9.0 or 0.10.0 only to discover that one of your enemies researched it as well when you're just 1 turn short of completing it...

Hmm,last game the Incas researched Miniturization 1 turn before me
at 1.8.1 research speed + used SETI as prebuild for the Internet.
I wouldn't call it the worst tech.

I have used Ironclads on an island map where I didnt have oil, and needed to build a navy to escort my transport fleet, because my opponents had ironclads.

I'd say FreeArtistry, but its got some use in a cultural victory.

Fascism maybe?

Stealth??

Agreed. Hate when that happens.

Last time it happened to me, not only the damn babs beat me for 1 turn, but they also traded the tech with a bunch of other civs (for what? they were all pretty broken).
Yeah, hate when that happens.

OFF-TOPIC: Tomoyo, your Misaki epic map is just plain evil.

OT: How far are you in the Misaki Epic, and (if you've signed up) who are you at my forum?

Doesn't advanced flight give you radar towers or something in C3C 1.22?

I never bother reasearching advanced flight or ironclads. Waste of time!

Sea power isn't as important in this game as it could be, compounded by the fact that the AI has almost no sea warfare strategy. Hence, you simply can pass on ironclads and wait for the real warships to arrive on the scene.
Well said!

Hopefully sea warfare will be improved for Civ4.

Didn't sign up, just wandered around a little and found that map.

The game is quite f****d up, i had the egyptians beat me in building the Great Lighthouse when i was 5 turns short of finishing it... and now i have to struggle with suicide galleys until astronomy. But i'll try to win it anyway.

Ah, originally I intended that map for a mod... one where you got sea-not sinking ships in the AA...

But this was on Monarch, IIRC. You have a good chance. ;)

ON-TOPIC: considering my current play style, and considering when i usually finish my games, the worst optional tech is, well... literature.

@Tomoyo: i think so, it would be a shame to lose it :D - i'll keep you informed, in your forum (here it would be a little spammy...). BTW, thanks for the challenge you provided me ;)

Oh, don't worry. Once i sign up you'll see who i am.

Most peaceable goverment??? Look at America's History their longest time of peace I think was 30 or so years between WWI and WWII.In civ i use it all half the time for war as it gives you a nice economic increase. That and the fact that all you need to fully achive a good economy is marketplaces, banks, stock exchanges, and wall street. :king:

Fascism is good for one thing. Sell it to AIs and watch them go into anarchy only to emerge in an inferior government. Never researched Ironclads, though. I suppose if you're not going past the early IA and you need to fight an intercontinental war against a strong naval power...

Ironclads, a useless tech situated at a time where much better techs are around.

Free artistry isn't too bad, espcially if you like going for OCCV
