having recently installed the PTW expansion i started a game as carthage. finally building the great lighthouse i immediately struck out to new continents...only to be lost at sea. thinking this may be a bug in the game, i restarted and waiting a few turns after i had built the lighthouse...lost at sea. has anyone else experienced this? does anyone have an answer or a fix? why bother building it if it won't help you anyway?

Since an earlier patch, Great Lighthouse only allows safe travel in SEA (medium blue) squares, not OCEAN (dark blue) squres. It's not a bug.

That feature of the Great Lighthouse has been around since one of the first patches. Wasn't it 1.16f?

I think it's been like that since the release of the original game.

No it was one of the Patches I think it was 1.17 or 1.22

The Great Lighthouse has always been in the game. It's one of the main wonders of the entire Civilization series.

I don't think that was the point of the discussion.

The issue was regarding whether or not the Great Lighthouse used to allow all ships unlimited travel in ocean tiles even before you researched Navigation or Magnetism, and if so, which patch changed it to the way it is now.

cerjr, the great lighthouse was downgraded for a good reason. If it allowed unlimited sea travel it would be much too powerful on non-pangea maps. Being able to safely travel around the world while all the other civs are limited to coast can easily win a game.

As it is now, its still a great wonder on many maps. I've had several games where the great lighthouse has given me the opportunity to settle minor islands, or to contact the other half of the civs in continents games. Being the only civ that has contact wth everyone for a full age is a great advantage.

TheNiceOne is right: The Lighthouse is a good wonder!
It's just not needed in every game! If you play on an archipelago map it's probably the most important wonder in the early game... They've made the wonder just about right, downgrading it a bit, 'cause in the earliest version it was just too powerfull...

I like the Lighthouse too, on any map other than Pangea it has uses. Thing is then I want Magellan's too I get used to the extra sea move and hate to lose it.

Plus I've noticed the AI wastes it they don't seem to risk ocean crossings and I can still get "first contact" ahead of an AI with the Lighthouse.

That's true. The AI never ends a turn so that any of its ships can sink. (Statement from Firaxis.)

worthless?
of course not, the lighthouse is always my first goal.
Im just crazy about warships and naval warfare.
always by middle ages I have a great fleet and I love sinking barbs ships.
hunt them all the time
