I can't belive that you missed this aircraft:
The Australian CA 15
It had superior performance to the P-51 D Mustang, and was the last propeller driven fighter aircraft developed from scratch by a Western nation (making it by default the 'ultimate' prop driven fighter ;) )

Sadly, the CA-15 arrived to late to enter service, and the Australian government settled on the Mustang as they were cheaper and quicker to acquire.

CA 15 Performance: Max speed, 448 mph at 26,400 ft. Rate of climb, 4,900 ft/min. Service ceiling, 39,000 ft. Range, 2,540 miles at 5,000 ft.

Mustang Peformance Max speed, 437 mph at 25,000 ft. Climb, 13 mins/30,000 ft. Service ceiling 41,900 ft. Range, 950 miles normal/1,7000 miles max.

Here's a picture of the CA-15:

And one of a Mustang in Australian service:

That Aussie fighter looks great.
They also developed a tank that would have been the equal of the German tanks, but that too was not produced because everything was geared around the Sherman.

In my opinion the best fighter was the Tempest.
That did see action.

*plug* Have a look at my Civ 2 scenario 'The Battle of Australia'. It includes the Sentinal tank, and Aussie aircraft such as the Wirraway, Boomerang [probably two of the worst fighters to see service) and the very cool Woomera
