There is no single greatest military unit in Civ3 - ?

Been playing Civ3 for a couple of weeks now, and I think I've shrugged off all the gameplay ghosts of Civ2. One thing I have noticed is that combat is now very random - e.g., even if your unit is one with high def/att values, there are usually no guarantees that it will win any combat. This makes for a more satisfying game in many ways (more strategy involved as you decide where to over-resource your military ahead of an expected attack, etc.); but in other ways, I do kinda miss the old Civ2 certainties, where 2 Musketeers fortified behind city walls could see off almost anything, and the Battleship was (for me) far and away the deadliest military unit on the board.

So is there a unit type in Civ3 that can function to the kind of level that a Civ2 unit could? I mean one that can win 99% of the time when fighting against a weaker unit. Mobile armour looks good but in my games they are never around for much of it, and Mech Infantry can get blown away by Riflemen.

Nukes?

Artillery is the single most dominant units besides nukes.

first cavalry, then tanks... aslong as you have the tech lead...

Arty is the king of the battlefield. Games are usually over very shortly after my getting the tech.

ICBMs also if your quick enough with tanks they can be dealy, you have to be quick though (or hope your opponet doesn't have rubber or oil)

Hmm, intresting. Never happened to me. I uaslly build a huge strike force without artillery. It's a weakness in my mind as I have to protect it with troops that could be attacking a city otherwise.

Artillery can reduce your casualties to almost zero. It is an absolute necessity.

A size 12 city with 3 4/4 Infantry could be down to size 1, no improvements, and 3 1/4 infantry with less than 50 artillery...if you have 10 cities that produce 80 spt, it's almost too easy. Same with me, artillery is the strongest.

@Tomoyo: Where did your avatar go and your title?

 never built more than 5... but i always play tiny maps...

The very high chance chance of winning can be achievec by attacking a rifleman that has been redlined by artillery with tanks or modern armor.

I also usually go with a 50 artillery stack as soon as I can come by it. Heavy bombardement means only one foreigner left in the enemy city to resist my allmighty rule :)

Ok, well...you can always use more. ;) A game I had not to long ago had around 65 artillery. Needless to say, combine that with tanks and I could pretty much dominate everyone. Setting some cities to good amounts of shields per turn is good for producing military units.

edit: Theoden, leave the cities you are about to conquer at size 2. That's because when you conquer them, the city size drops 1. Just a tip.

Whoah! That the map is tiny doesn't mean you need less artillery pieces to crush a single city. Try building a decent number in your next game; you'll be pleasantly surprised.

The only reason why you should build more artillery is because you can fire every single one of them every single turn (or move them) and, due to the speed of the artillery, you can't move fast enough.

Note: New year, new avatar, new title, new signature, new etc.

Artillery? Uh? I can sort of see the benefit of using them in super-stacks of 50 or so, but taken individually they're probably the worst military unit in the game. And I don't count nukes as a military unit in the same way as cavalry, say, or modern armor. Cavalry do rule the battlefield for as long as they're not superseded, but again they're nothing like the super units of Civ2. Oh well, though, makes the game more interesting. I can honestly say that I never lost a game on Civ2, but out of 3 games played on Civ3, I've only won one. Just got my backside kicked on a Regent game because I again overestimated my units' abilities to defend my territory from a concerted attack. When it looked hopeless I launched my nukes for a laugh and then just quit. Will start again, with fresh ideas...
