There is no single greatest military unit in Civ3 - ?

Well, In civ3 there isn't really a greatest unit because of the wacky, pseudo RNG.

IIRC, they use a basic linear congruential PRNG like Civ2 and SMAC. It has been repeatedly tested and found to be typical for its class of PRNGs.

If your strategy relies on one die roll battles, I recommend you revise your strategy.

CIVIII is to random. I spent 15 Knights(Veteran) on 2 Spearmen(Elite).

I think the game uses a random-array that must be saved with the game. Because I usually save my game before a great attack. Some attacks ends in desasters(against all posibillty) and so I reloaded the game. But all the fights ended with exactly the same consequences.

You won't get one single answer to this problem, but the most common answer, and mine as well, will be artillery. Artillery is the single greatest advantage the player has over the AI in war.

In C3C, it might also be a healthy dose of bombers added in at the end of the game. Bombard the AI with arty, then send in the bombers to finish them off. You won't have to fight a single unit ever again!

To draw a broad generality based on observations in this and other threads, I think it is fascinating that there is such a strong correlation between the players who complain about the pRNG combat system, and the players who do not use artillery.

i personally never use arty... but then again in a bloody newb and dont know how to use em. I like the Cavalry and well the modern armor. but I can easily see how arty will make things easier.

ICBM. (although its not moral and i never bomb innocents, even in a game.)

Is there a way to have all you'r arty's bombard a city?
Its anoying to click it 40 times :)
you can hold "b", click a million times on the city (as fast as you can), then walking away for a while, and when you come back they will all have fired.

I suppose the ultimate CivIII combat unit, considering the time it's available, is the 3 Ancient Cavalry Army. 18 HP if you manage to fill it with elites, and effective stats 4½.3.3, IIRC. Pulverizes just about anything in the Ancient Times.

Settlers, LOL

And if you disable "wait at end-of-turn", they could have even fired twice.:D
