They're Flasks Not Beakers, People!!!

It's a stupid, petty debate but I'm a stupid, petty person. In Civ 1, they were not flasks, nor beakers, nor test tubes: they were lightbulbs. I'm somewhat shocked that no-one has yet clarified this.

Yeah, and they used shields instead of hammers to build stuff. :crazyeye:

I'm confused. I thought this was a flask:

Not much resemblance to " :science: " if you ask me ...

Whatever! The day Americans stop calling that lemon(Spearthrower :goodjob: ) sport of them "football", then I call it by whatever name you want, OK? :crazyeye:

Well, if you ask Magritte, you're all wrong ... ceci n'est pas une beaker, nor a flask -- just try stuffing it with chemicals. :king:

In Football, you use your foot... to kick a ball.... what else would you want to call it?

Then we look at "American Football"..... and realise that you carry a lemon shaped object... and thus we can safely say..... that the game should be called Carry Lemon. :p

lol sw33t u are so right.

Ok, after some research ( most of you are americans and I didn't had certainties about the jargons used in that side of the Atlantic :p ), I have to give reason to the OP: :science: is a erlenmayer ( or erlenmeyer ) flask. Just for comparison, see this ( courtesy of UCLA )

P.s As we are going to enter in pedantic mode  , uranium natural source ( Uranite or Pichblende) looks like this:

Pichblende.jpg

Uranium itself looks like this:

Why does the uranium in game looks like glowing green cristals? ( P.S I know the answer....( see spoiler below )
Spoiler :

Ignore the kid....

Nuclear centrals use a fluoroscein-type corant in the water used in the cooling systems, to spot better possible leaks ( A glowing green liquid is harder to ignore than colourless water) .Gradually the association "glowing green stuff" = nuclear stuff entered in people heads ( blame the comic books.... ) and the rest is history....

I prefer the idea of hundreds of Beakers muppeting around the place, being the source of my technology. A little insanity is good for a ruler. :)

This thread is turning into Carrot Top's act. :)

No offense to Spear!

Soccer is a humiliating word for football.

About the flask, beaker etc.. We call them "Erlenmayer Becher" or a shortcut "Erlen".

Soccer is a humiliating word for football.

Of course it is! And it deserves it. What a boring sport to watch!
It's just like baseball: fun to play, but absolutely boring to watch.
Professional soccer is just a bunch of guys running from one side of a grass field to the other with a ball. And after 5 hours of running, if we're lucky, and only if we're lucky, there'll be a goal! Woohoo! What a game!

Sorry for this, but I grew up with the fastest and most spectacular game on earth :king: (namely NHL Hockey of they 80 and early 90s).
The game was mostly on the offense back then. Puck magicians were on the ice (Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux to name only the two greatest and most talented player in the history of this sport) Scores usually were around 3-2, 4-3, and 5-4 and often got to 7-6 and even 8-7.
That made for interesting games. Something actually happened in almost every game. The wind could change sides frequently. 1-0 or 1-1 games were very very rare, while they are the norm in soccer.

On topic, no matter what is the real name for the symbol, Beaker sounds better. As someone said, it sound more science related. And I've never watch the muppet.

May I say one thing.

After dozens of HRE, Poland, Sweden etc. threads, this one is actually among the greatest threads on board! :goodjob:

:D

Yes quite fun to read.

There should be a poll too. Beaker or Flask or Erlenmayer

I think I'd vote for Erlen simply because it would sound weird talking about "producing more Erlens"...

A boring sport which is the most popular on earth! Man, people are boring~!!

It is all question of how you see it, and I prefer to see it as a beaker! Sue me!

ps: nothing against Hockey. I actually like the sport. OK, the movies about it, more specifically.

It's inexpensive, it can be played just about everywhere and on most surfaces I even played it on snow and iced pavements when I was in kid's school... (dangerous, but quite fun)
All you need to play soccer is a ball, a field and anykind object available to delineate the size of the goals.

The most democratic sport on earth, I'll give you that and it's fun to play, but during professional games, nothing happens. When the scores gets past 2-1, sports analysts strats to talk about an offensive match.

Since people often get interested in the sports they play, it's no wonder it is the most popular sports on earth! It doesn't make it to most interesting to watch.

Not the Mighty Ducks, I hope. What a shame this was!!!

[offtopic] Sorry about that, I can't help make fun of soccer.

and we totally want symbols in this game, not actual glass thingies, especially now that they added random events.

  that made my evening

OT: I am playing since Civ 1, slap me but I still say beakers and shields. I also caught myself searching for "King Richards Crusade" and, yes, I even miss the camel.
