IMO Civ3 was in places not as good as SMAC. For a start in Civ you can be loyal allies fighting some evil foe but you cannot defend your allies' cities or even occupy the same tile, that is ridiculous as it worked so well in SMAC.

Civ3 should have carried on the SMAC form of government, with you being able to choose not just from set government types but to make up your own, choosing your economy etc.

And why does Civ not have mindworms?! :p

Things from smac that should be reintegrated:

Govermants sytem
Social values
Spread cultural borders (no more gap filling AI cities)
Workshop(maybe)
More diffrences between civs

And another thing i really liked, but is not so important for the gameplay, were the "voices" or should i say the speaches after you build or reserch things. They were great and added quiet a (spooky) filling to the game.

Cool SMAC stuff:

3D terrain
multiple improvement on one tile
supply crawlers
modular government and social values
design workshop for units
espionage (I liked the way it worked, though it might have been too powerful to be able to see inside enemy cities any time at all)

Good Civ 3 stuff:
air combat (no more using a plane to block terrain for a turn, or defend a stack of attackers)
culture
trading
strategic resources

Civ IV, or SMAC II, or both.

Supply crawlers were to powerful in smac. If the concept ever does return, it needs to be tweaked a little bit. It use to be when I played smax it be like "hey, supply crawlers - I won!". Especially when I played yang. Now when I play it (I get the itch sometimes), I refrain from going crazy with those little things because it's like cheating.

I love the whole "living map" in smac. I don't know how well it fit into a civ game though. It's so much fun raising the land to connect another land mass, or just using that feature to screw over the ai in various ways. I always wish I could connect 2 pieces of land in civ. Not a smac concept, but at least let us build a road bridge if the sea/water area is just 1 square, something like that.

I do dig them "voice overs" when a tech is discovered.

I can live without the wonder movies. Wasn't long before I turned that feature off.

Really, I think they just need to make a smac 2. If they did make smac 2, they probably take everything I like about the game and change it though, so have to be careful what I wish for.
