Things that suck about doing well

The lamest thing about the GS -> Philosophy sling has gotta be having to listen to the goddamn medieval music from like 500BC till you get Edu. God I hate this inane Christian monestary music. In my current game with Freddy, I got CoL, Phil and the Oracle on the same turn (and no, I didn't use the Oracle to sling CoL either  ), and, to my horror, the game decided to blast me with the overwhelming awesomeness of castrated monks singing in nonsensical Latin. I was rocking out to the tribal war theme from the classical era.

So, keeping with my theme of senseless anger at being mocked for doing well, anyone else wanna share a neurosi about a minor side effect of doing well?

hahaha!

i get so bored with the early early music that i ended up making my own custom folder of music to use. i set it in the options, so it only ever plays what's in there. baba yetu is in there at least 3 times btw *giggle*.

Interesting--I find all the game music enjoyable, though the modern tracks do get a little tedious after awhile. I guess that's a minor side effect of doing well, since I survived to the modern era.

(I recently figured out, with a LOT of help from this board, how to customize the XML with my own music for a particular era--it ain't easy!)

The main problem with doing well is that you get to a point in the late game where the income is not in doubt. You then simply have to put in the turns to get the victory that is already yours.

I'm playing an off-line game right now which is more of a horse race, and it's a lot more fun. Qin and Asoka each have a space race techs on me and vice-versa, Qin beat me to the Three Gorges Dam, and Monty just declared war on me after being my pet dog for most of the game, the putz. It's gonna go down to the wire, which is unusual in my games--I usually either have the win never in doubt by the modern era, or I fail spectacularly with some big gamble early on.

man, I envy the 'good games.' I think thats a sign I'm done with Prince. If I play a 'serious' game, theres no contest at all. I find myself doing things like trying a priest/Wat/Sankore/Spiral economy with Ramses cause I'm bored. (FYI, it doesn't work, I could handle the early and midgame wars with the priest/Wat combo, but later on I really started losing the tech race since i was tied to an all priest SE [I did get the Pyramids, so that helped worlds and was probably the only reason it was even semi-viable  ]).

Oh well, back to drinking and playing Wii Bowling until I decide to play that Freddy game again, or start a new one, cause at 800AD, I've basically won already (I'm up like 2 tiers in the tech race, thanks to some nice trades I could make [Louis offered me 1080g for CoL, like WTH. How he got 1000g before 1AD is beyond me, unless he happened to be building like every wonder in existence and failed on them ALL :crazyeye: )

yeah it's the early and the modern music that i can't stand. i started off trying to do it the way you did, but then thank goodness found out the simple built in 'custom music folder' thing and man oh man that saved me weeks of frustration. XML and KMad don't get along well together.

i can think of one thing right off that irks me about getting ahead of the bad guys. i get realllllllllllly irritated looking at the tech trading screen and seeing that all the other civs 'can research' something i don't want to bother researching on my own, i just wanna trade for it thanks ever so. sometimes i even gave them a prereq to give them the ability to research it in the first place, so get to work dudes! i check that screen turn after turn, century after century... do they ever get it? noooooooooooo. they are taunting me, forcing me to research it myself! i swear it's a conspiracy!!! total cheater admission: once i got SO frustrated with this that i went into WB and gave them all the tech and then went around shopping for who'd trade it to me for the best deal haha. :mischief: i was a bad girl. i rationalized that it was less cheating than it would have been to just give it to myself. but even i don't believe that one.

hahaha. that's one way to make money i suppose!

ps reading your sig i instantly heard it in my head in the exact same way it's spoken in SMAC. was kinda spooky!

Hmm.. I actially switch of in game music after one game, it get boring. May be I should switch it on again and check for some fun.

How can you not like the medieval era music? That's the best war time music in the game. Nothing better than peaceful music playing while violent things are happening, like the christening scene in The Godfather.

I dislike the modern tracks too. They often sound like robotic beeping or anachronistic frenetic choral singing. The game should play tracks like Robert Miles' Children or something. I used to play that for the modern age in Civ2 (manually).

I also like the medieval music, and I liked the John Adams violin concerto so much that I downloaded it from iTunes. Luckily, I like Adams's stuff anyway - although playing in the modern era takes so long that I often just turn off the music. To be honest, I like most of the music, although it can be a pain to hear the same piece twice in quick succession.

Just turn it off!
