Things you only just now realized

You can immediately make peace with city-states right after you've captured their worker. Never wanted to use this strategy but I began using it since I moved to immortal. If I knew this I probably began earlier with doing it :goodjob:

You can also get a barb to catch them later in the game once you don't need them, recapture them, and then return them to the original CS for free influence!

Win or lose, I frequently keep playing after the game is over. For many turns, it is an interesting sand box.

I only just realized that you can win a domination victory after losing by DV, CV, SV! You get the screen and it unlocks any achievements associated with the victory.

Probably this only works for GnK, not BNW.

My husband, who is far more inclined to start late game wars than me, had never tried putting a bomber on a carrier, because he knew from RL that a bomber wouldn't fit. He was watching me play one day and saw me moving my bombers around on carriers. It had never occurred to me that it wouldn't work, because I know far less about the actual RL units.

(Of course, since finding that out, he's gone even more warmongery in his late games!)

I just realized that caravans and gargo ships cost upkeep. So trade route can be cost you more money than you earn from it.

But you learned this WRONG. They do NOT incur maintenance costs: they are freebies, just like guided missiles.

They (also like guided missiles) DO count against unit SUPPLY in your F3 (military advisor panel).

That if I really want to have the order or freedom ideology, I should pick autonomy.

When the rest of the WHOLE world picks order or freedom, I can finally have it. Five policies later.

Actually...

The image used for the bomber icon is a stylized B-25:

Which was famously used in the Doolittle Raid, launching from the USS Hornet.

The planes were never designed to be carrier launched. They were stripped to the bone, flew with a skeleton crew, and lacked the range for a round trip (all 16 were ditched or crashed, save one).

The B-2, on the other hand, only flew out of a single airbase in Missouri (inflight refueling and looong missions) up until a couple of years ago when they added a second base by upgrading Diego Garcia.

But I still didn't try to put bombers on carriers until I saw the AI do it. Then promptly upgraded them and facepalmed.

That plane seems obsolete now with the advent of the stealth bomber. At least that plane doesn't sound like a lawnmower that much like the earlier models. :)

I just realized that the Maya Achievement "nuke them by the year 2012" is still doable. I thought being today year 2014, it was impossible to get. what Firaxis meant was, hit them with a nuke in 2012 in-game. :newyear:

Can you keep playing the game to get the achievements you are missing?

Are you sure? The bomber looks more like an Avro Lancaster than a B-25 Mitchell to me...

Anyway, it's been ages since I first started playing Civilization (my first game was Civ III) so I don't remember whether I was surprised by the fact that you could put bombers on carriers... I did know a bit about military aircraft then, though, so it might have done.

One thing that did surprise me - well, not just now but in a game last month - was when I proposed a trade embargo on one of my enemies and saw I could still trade luxuries and other resources with them. I didn't realise at the time that it meant only an embargo on trade routes, and not all trading! Granted I could probably have realised that by looking more closely at the proposal... :p

Y'know... You're right. That tail layout is something that I always associate with the B-25. I mean I knew the four engines weren't correct for the B-25, but dismissed that and other differences to (as I put it) "stylization".

What a shame, I was enjoying the idea that the Dev team was making a joke about bombers on carriers.

Edit: I also never looked closely at the ingame model (just the icon). Your close-up of it makes it look strikingly like a Lancaster. I would never have thought it was based on the B-25 from that perspective.

I suppose it's not impossible to say that they decided to allow bombers on carriers because of the Doolittle Raid, regardless of what the bomber looked like, since it otherwise might be counter-intuitive if you knew a bit about carriers (and didn't know about the raid - I didn't until I saw your link!). Sure it might have been just a gameplay decision but you never know.

I just now realized that liberty can be better in some archipelago maps instead of tradition honor or piety.

Most of the time liberty is stronger than Honor at least. I usually take it instead of Tradition now, since I find tradition boring. With liberty, you can go wide and improve your tiles quickly without having to sacrifice too much growth or production (for workers and settlers) in your city.

I just realized that I have played over 3200 hours on this game, that I don't really like?

I do like the early years, so my Hall of Fame only have 3 entries...

I must be mad!!!
