Avoid the Earth map at all costs. I mean you can try it once you're bored of Continents/Pangaea etc. but it's pretty awful, at least on standard size.

What map is best (shape and size)? I like continents.

I don't know about best, but everyone seems to have different preferences. For myself, I like Continents for Coastal Trade and 'Discovering the New World' mid-game. It also cuts down on the need to Warmonger or to Prepare for Aggressive AI's most of the time.
