Well, I've mastered Civ4 vanilla, but am haveing troulbles grasping the espinoge points system any tips?

Various buildings supply the points. Raising the slider is rarely needed for me.

Scroll over the leaders in the list above the minimap to see the espionage point ratios you have with them (Them/You).

Go to Espionage screen and raise the "weight" (point allocation) of potential threat civilizations. Later this "weight" can be more easily balanced among all civilizations.

Your spys will then use these points accumulated toward each civilization to do misssions.
NOTE: The cost of the mission is taken from the total.

The espionage ratios also effect how much missions will cost either by you or against you. Thus if a civilization has a ratio of 10/1000 (them/you) then he will most likely not be able to afford a major mission againts you.

The longer a spy "sleeps" in a city then the lower the cost of a mission and less likely hood of the spy being discovered , sleeping or performing.

That's about it for the basics. There's alot of advanced strategies to discover.

Is there a link or something I can go to for more help?

I think you should just play around with it.

Espionage Points (EPs) come from your palace, certain buildings & wonders, spy specialists, and the Espionage slider.

EPs are used passively and actively. Passively, they reveal what your opponents are researching if you have EP superiority over that opponent. Actively, they are used by spy units to perform missions in enemy cities.

Spies require the Alphabet tech, and missions are fairly pricey in terms of EPs spent.

Try adjusting the EP "weighting" system on the Espionage screen. Build a spy and send it into an enemy city and see what your options are.

Personally, I like to use the counterespionage mission when I am in war (or about to be), becuase it greatly reduces the success rate of AI spy missions, like the irritating poisoned water mission. I will also use a spy to create civil disorder, which causes the city to enter unrest (and removes cultural defenses) for one turn, though this is an expensive mission.

Also note that a Great Spy can be used to generate EPs against one particular opponent, which can be very handy if you know you're going to be at war with them or just want to steal technologies. Great Spies can also be setlted as super specialists (for research and EPs) or to build the Scotland Yard, an Academy-like building that improves EP production in the city.

I also have a couple of questions but don't want to start a new thread:

1. What does the little espionage symbol next to some of the opponents' names mean?
2. Am I right in assuming that the ability to see inside other Civ's cities if they have your religion, has been removed?

@ Starworms

1. The espionage symbol next to opponents name means that you have more EP invested in that opponent than the opponent has invested in you.
2. That is correct. The espionage system is what allows city visibility not having the Shrine of the religion in the city.

1 - It means that you have the espionage advantage against that Civ. (You have more points accumulated against them than they do against you.)

2 - Your assumption is correct. Great job with your assumptions. :goodjob:

Man, I wish we had a manual that described the actual Espionage system, not some other one.

I just learned this yesterday. You now get visibility based on espionage points, but you also get a discount on spy actions in a city if it has your religion in it. Makes holding a holy city a little less gross - though the extra money from the shrine is perhaps even more huge in the late game due to corporations.

i usually ignore Espionage, for the most part.

i dedicate one city for espionage with Great Spies and Scotland Yard, otherwise i don't build any spies.

the AI spends their points, so you'll always have more then them and can see all their cities etc. without even touching the espionage slider.
