Thoughts for SGOTM 14

Sorry to criticize Gumbolt, but your idea of no Great People is totally broken.
If you build or capture a wonder, even a NW, you will generate GP, no matter what you do. Obviously we can have a no-wonders-rule, which means that if you capture a city with a WW you must raze it. But such rule will be too much of an handicap for the human, i think.

I never said it would not challenge the player. The only downside is that it may restrict game play too much making a cottage industry the obvious route. Yet GP generation is a game mechanic the mods can trace. All I am suggesting is inventing a game that restricts use of GP in some way.

So you can only produce a certain type of GP. Etc.

@ mabraham - A lot of ideas there but the trouble is you can't monitor them. Eg. I could mine a copper resource and simply pillage it. Unless you intend to remove certain resources from the game completely? The downside here would be if one team fluked a certain resource by chance. You can find resources like gold/silver etc by mining.

Lots of very interesting ideas for sure.

I personally am not a fan of the "loss" idea only because we did it already.

I definitely like the idea of "extra" requirements in addition to the VC.

I like the ideas about "mastery" and/or "cosmopolitan". Both of these force a bit of "broadening" away from standard thinking.

Is how long the game takes to play really an issue?

A no metal unit game sounds interesting and you could monitor it. A completely no metal game is also possible with a few additional rules. You must pillage any metal that pops up. Or you could just make a rule no mines what so ever.

You can still plant cities on metal, and you may have founded a city on aluminum/copper/iron without knowing it too.

Any idea like this would have to remove them completely from out local lands. As for the no mines. How do you ever prove it?? You can't! Mines can be built over. Mines can be built by the AI too.

This is all getting far too complicated.

The idea for getting all the corps late game was interesting. Mix this in with something like culture/ diplomatic win and that could work.

You could be cruel and do a island game again and require a culture win! Might not get Shuhe approval though. :mischief:

A no metal unit game is not complicated and I think an interesting twist that affects the entire game not just an additional requirement to a VC.

Admittedly a no metal at all game has complications.

Perhaps a custom Buffy MOD would be needed to enforce that - assuming that the save contains information about the game state between save uploads. That might not be practical for one reason or another...

Slightly off-topic, but I didn't want to start a new thread and clutter up this sub-forum.

Are these SGOTMs invite only? I'd love to play one with better players and learn oodles, but I'm only a Monarch player, and not a very good one so I don't know that my in-game blundering would be welcome

It's open to everyone and there are plenty of folks who play the SGOTM that are or at least started with lower level experience. You will learn a lot. Once the announcement goes out you can just sign up. Don't let Kossin scare you even though he is very scary ;)

Don't forget that the archives are still up - there are dozens of SGOTMs you can play through "with a top team". At each save, form your own ideas, read the team thread, modify your ideas, play it on the uploaded save, and then compare your results. Then repeat for the next save.

Me, scary? That's news to me!

EDIT: I agree with bbp, if the map makers prefer to come up with another brilliant scenario on their own, I'm perfectly fine with waiting a bit (hopefully not 6 months :p). Ideas never hurt however...

I'd love a game that requires challenging late game manipulations. Maybe even give all the teams the same 1AD start file and see where they can take it. I feel like there is so much focus on the early game that I've learned to really suck at the late game as a result :).

Oh, and deity Pangaea to make up for the emperor archipelago :p. I'd love a game where my team is challenged to pull out a victory rather than primarily races the clock. Alternatively, we could have a deity always war game where people see how long they can survive :p.

Nice ideas!

I remember well the SG where Vikings has to lost to a SS.
The problem in our game was that Hannibal became a monster even before we knew where he was and that he acquired an insane tech lead.
In other games this won't happened and some of those managed to bring Gandhi to Space.
Too much about luck, like any "passive" VC. This competition has removed as much as possible random elements, so better keep this habit.

I'm watching the Tour de France on television and that gave me the idea that the next SGOTM could be held as a stage race. It's still supposed to be one game, but divided into stages with a specific goal for each stage. When the time limit is reached for a given stage the teams are assigned point according to how fast the stage goal was reached and the intermediate result is posted for all to see. Consider this as an example off the top of my head:

Stage 1 (Week 5): 4 cities
Stage 2 (Week 7): Currency
Stage 3 (Week 9): 8 cities
Stage 4 (Week 11): Oxford
Stage 5 (Week 13): One Civ eliminated
Stage 6 (Week 15): Biology
Stage 7 (Week 18): Any victory chosen by the team

So the winner of Stage 1 would be the team that first have 4 cities. Note that it should be mandatory to complete the stages in the given order i.e. in the example it would not be allowed to research Currency before founding 4 cities and city number 8 would have to wait until Currency was known. Stage 1 must be completed after 5 weeks, Stage 2 after 7 weeks, ... Of course, a team could play faster if they don't want to wait for the announcement of the stage results.

The advantage of the Stage Race is that it gives more information about how fast the rival teams are and it may even be possible for some of the "average" teams to snatch a Stage win. "Disadvantage" is increased work for the admins because results of each stage have to be compiled and announced as the game progresses.

That sounds interesting, but could you give me a hint how to find the initial and game-in-progress saves. I found the discussion threads for the SGOTM that just finished, and the final saves and a worldbuilder file on the results page. It looks as if the initial saves were also on (what is now) the results page at one time, but are they still available?

+1

I also found final saves, a worldbuilder save, but no start saves or progress saves.

Go to the Progress & Results page. Below the table and above the graph, there is a pull-down menu called "Display Format". Select List of Saves and hit the refresh button.

I believe the appropriate comment is "Doh!" At least I'm not the only one.

Thanks BBP.
