Thoughts on Diablo III?

Some guy from Blizzard(?) named Bashiok confirms that Diablo III will be released on consoles. Blizzard does have their own division working on the console versions though, so hopefully it won't degrade the PC version (or it could, I don't really care if Blizzard suffers).

Yeah Bashiok is the community manager (read PR BS rehasher) for Blizzard on D3. Just read that news too. Actually it's not really a news as much as a confirmation of something that was pretty much certain to happen and was already discussed quite a bit over there. It's not the first time it happens as they released StarCraft for n64 and Diablo 1 on the first Playstation (both were not very good ports really...). They also published some awesome games on SNES back in the days (Blackthorne, Lost Vikings, but the Blizzard from then is quite different from the monster of today).

I think the console version will probably come much later than the computer versions.

Supposedly some changes have been made to the game, I've heard.

Game likely won't be out before summer I assume.

The never ending story. :D

I just got a beta invite

Check your Battle.net account because I never got an e-mail about it. I suspect millions of people must have gotten it at the same time, because I was never the lucky type of guy who was in the 1% of people to get into a beta.

Hmm, I think I have to check my account, too! :eekdance:

I played through with the Wizard.

The problem with this beta is that it covers what will invariably be the most boring part of the game. I don't know what the hell they're thinking and I'm surprised no reviewers or any website has come out and mentioned this more loudly. Act 1 of normal difficulty, as in Diablo 2, is boring. And for the D3 beta, it's even worse because it's "the first 1/3rd of the first act". You know, that amazing part where everything is foggy grey-brown and all you find are "Fine leather gloves" and "sturdy leather boots". Anyway, they're really late with this game, it looks like a 2005-2006 games. But the destructible environments and some of the effects sort of save the day.

That being said, I can already tell that the gameplay is a lot tighter than in all the other "diablo-clones" or action RPGs. Everything is smooth and flows, the game is quick, everything is easy to get too, the character is super responsive, the death animations and sounds are very satisfying. This is where Diablo always outshone its competitors...

First, there were games like Starcraft and Diablo, which allowed a group of friends to play on a LAN together with only one copy of the game via the Spawn feature. And God saw that it was good.

Then, there was Diablo II. It lacked the Spawn feature, but players could still choose between single-player, LAN, and Battle.net, so God saw that it was not as good as before, but still good.

Then, there was World of Warcraft, which was basically a Diablo game (complete with an NPC named Griswold and an item called the Butcher's Cleaver), but with a much crappier combat system, sillier quests and items, cartoony graphics, and the ability to play as a species other than human. It didn't allow offline play, but it's an MMO, so God was like "Well, what do you expect?"

Then, there was Starcraft II, which did not feature LAN play at all. Players were restricted to single-player and Battle.net, and God, or at least the South Koreans, saw that it was NOT good, and continued playing Brood War.

Now, there will be Diablo III, which does not even offer a single-player option. Everyone will have to play on Battle.net, because apparently, Bliz has stopped paying attention to the Command & Conquer franchise, which died a horrible, gruesome death when Tiberian Twilight tried the same idiotic scheme. Bliz has apparently also forgotten that Diablo and WoW are not the same thing, and a lot of Diablo fans look down on WoW. And God said "Screw this, I'm gonna play Hellgate London"

IIRC Starcraft 2 also required a battlenet connection in order to enter the game.

In an investors conference call today, Blizzard announced that they would be releasing more info on release date within the next few weeks, and that they are now targeting "Q2" as a release time.

They also said

We've only ever said "early 2012". And we just decided we'd need until Q2 this week.

So they live in a world where Q2 is "early 2012". I guess you should expect as much from a company that thinks "soon" can be over a year.

Also note the use of the word "targeting Q2", which means it might as well be Q3... of 2013.
