thunderfall patch upcoming?

this member thunderfall claims there be a patch this week. I hope it will!! ) thanks for sharing this with us thunder, however, i must say im very sceptical. First, why don't you post us a ctrl-c ctrl-v of your email as proof firaxis really said that, because noone else is seeming to get this answer, and secondly, on the civ4 official webpage there is no such announcement to claim to obey the European laws of every industry(except software) to fix such bigger problems within 14days or give back the money to the people.

I don't see any such announcement? so thunderfall, i hope you are right, and your email is real ) but to be honest with you, i have my very doubts that firaxis could know WHEN they have the fix, they have a build in updater in civ, they don't need to wait for some patch release day, the very moment they find a solution, even if it's only 1 of many, they could just update by the build-in updating routine, and there's no need to wait for releasing patches, so why would they state a update coming this week?

just release every single fix the moment you find the problems firaxis!! we, the gamers, don't mind if you just release the fixes the moment you make them! and we don't mind if you release them the same day instead of letting us waiting for weeks! but of course, we all understand finding problems is not the easiest job in programming but why the hell make prognoses? it's the same like finding a pencil in a football stadion claiming i can do it within 1 hour or 2 weeks..i don't know! you can overlook it 100times, you simple don't know, unless you already found it, and just making a solution for it, but why not releasing the solution instead of telling:"next week" just fix it and release it!! and let us know you're working on it! this way of communicating with the civ community through several people by emails is annoying, how do we know who is speaking his "thoughts" and who is sharing his "knowledge?"

Uhm, Mr. Genius, this member Thunderfall you refer to happens to be the Administrator of this forum. He is exceptionally well connected with the developers and if he says that he communicated with Firaxis by e-mail, then I think we should just take his word for it. It's good enough for me, at any rate.

I understand that you are anxious to receive a patch. Past experience tells us that game companies generally not announce when the next patch will come out. That is at least my experience with , and , so why should be expect it be different for . In fact, civ3.com doesn't even contain any patches for Civ3 vanilla and any PtW and C3C patches for non-US customers.

Judging from the amount of issues posted here, I can only imagine it's gonna be quite huge. And for us, 56kers, would definitely got smoked if it's going to be one of those half-gig patches.

Based on experience with previous versions of the game, I'd say in the order of 10-25MB. However, since they indicated they also optimized various videos, if they are going to redistribute the movies, anything is possible. In that case, I think they'd be wise to release different patch modules so you can pick which you want to update.

I'm guessing that they will have optimised the underlying code in the Civilization4.exe or any other file in the Civ4 folder that calls for the movies to be played in game. May even come with a new set of BINK DLLs to optimise further ... We wont know until the patch arrives

Game companies will normally not announce a hard-date on a patch. You can imagine what the community would be like if the date slipped by because development or testing was taking longer than expected.

Remember that Civ2 patch that totally broke the AI? The computer players just sat there drooling, not even realizing that you were conquering the whole world ... imagine something like this happening now ... *shudder* ... the internet has grown far away from the friendly usenet community of those days.

On topic: Firaxis will supply patches when they are ready. The are undoubtedly working hard to improve the game and overcome the technical issues. They always did. And that's all I need to know. I will play this game for years. Whether the next patch comes this week or next month, doesn't really matter to me.

Also, any information that is not on the official site should be taken with a grain of salt IMHO. A private message that Firxis are aiming for a patch within this week is nice to hear, but by no means a guarantee. So don't be disappointed if it doesn't work out. Specifically, don't blame Firaxis and don't blame the messenger (which was not Thunderfall, AFAIK the info originated here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=137477 ). All this would achieve were that they'd be more reluctant to give out such info in the future.

There is really very little of a correlation between the number of bugs and the size of the patch, because it depends on how the game engine is built, how many parts of the software are affected, how the patching software itself is built, etc. It's entirely possible to fix 10 bugs in a 1KB patch or one bug in a 5MB patch.

TF is under NDAs with Firaxis. Because of this, he is under some limitations on what he can and can't do.

Heh... yeah, mrgenie... look at the credits for the game and see that Thunderfall's in them. Then look at the pre-release features here, screenshot after screenshot after screenshot. Then realize that, Firaxis authorized him to do that. Gee, think he's got SOME credibility with respect to Firaxis?

Yes, I know, I know. Just the idea of downloading something at 2KB/s is slightly offputting and its supposed to be a broadband connection!
