How long does a game normally take you to complete? How do you normally proceed - through conquest or space race?
Thanks
Aydrian

Hi Aydrian! Well, I play for conquest and try to finish as fast as possible, which is usually about 120 turns. On Deity or Emperor level, that's about 400AD. A few months ago, I was more relaxed about it and tried to build as many wonders as possible - don't ask me why! Then, I would finish around 1800AD (or not at all).

In terms of hours ? I guess one of those 120 turn games takes me about 8 hours, over a 1-2 day period. Many people have trouble finishing their GOTM games in a month, though. Check out the GOTM forum to see how different people play. Even better, try the GOTM yourself !

Hello Aydrian and welcome to Civfanatics.

Having read your question I got the impression that you are new to Civilization, at least Civ2.

In that case you might *not* be playing at deity level (hardest).
At chieftain level (easiest) the game might move a bit faster than on deity.

Basically the playtime required depends on the number of cities you have, the more cities the longer time (this is because a large amount of your time is taken up by managing your cites, giving the orders, improving the countryside around them and so on.

One type of game that is speedy is the so called OCC (one city challenge) in this type of game you only build a single city, and (obviously) atempt to win by space ship. This type of game can be finished in but a few hours, particularly if you play as chieftain. If you find that the computer wipes you out as you aproach the time to build your spaceship you could try what I call the FCC (few city challenge, 4 cities tops) which is basically an OCC with a few extra cities to support the effort of your "SCIENCE CITY".

If you go for wining by conquest you should be prepared for a long game, several days of playtime, particularly if you are new to Civ, you need a lot of cities to take on the opponents and for every city you conquer your workload increase.

Before you start to play you should decide wether you want to win by space ship or by conquest, then play accordingly. Your strategies for selecting civadvances and what you build will depend on which type of victory you are trying to achive.

To decide the best tactics and what to invent, take a look at the guide by ElephantU in: Civilization Fanatics' Forums > CIVILIZATION II > Civ2 - Strategy & Tips , the threads name is: Tips & Tricks for New Players, (just click on the link).

I usually win by space race but before I lunch my starship I try to conquere the whole world except one city.

Depending on the level of difficult it take from 0 AD(Chieftain, good game) to 2000 AD(Deity, exellent game).

Sometimes I also play conquest, especially on scenarios. In normal games I can conquer the world(large worldmap) until 1500BC(Chieftain) or 2000AD(Deity, good game). In scenarios(of it strongly depends on the scenario itself) I finish in about 100 to 150 turns, sometimes also earlier.

I think I have a world record I can lodge: One of my games took me a year and a half to complete. Not due to lack of skill, but... Let's just say trying to micromanage well over 100 cities has some downsides ;)

(I won by spaceship in 1959. Warlord, BTW.)

It usually takes me more than a month to finish a game, but mainly because I don't have much time to play. Also, late in the game, micromanaging and moving huge armies across the map can take a lot of time.

If I don't get bored I play very quick games - few hours and all are dead!
But I prefer small maps.
And I found a "strange" thing - if you are super-advanced you better have some 2-3 cities and then you might get more than 1 advance per turn.
It is a pity that even if you get science enough for 2 ads you get only 1 per turn...
I always "show them who I am".
KILL! BURN! DESTROY!
And... CHEAT (politically).
I love getting the Great Wall and then "sucking" their money or advances by demanding tribute every turn.
I think that the Wall and the Library (both Great  ) are the supreme Wonders.
Also I always rush for Monarchy and then for Republic.
BTW the pros of Democracy are deminished in Civ2...
And the Wonder letting you any goverment should be MUCH EARLIER than already getting Democracy...
In Civ1 you can get Democracy very quickly and here you must research it to get a "wonder".
Do you think I ever used Communism or Fundamentalism???
I always go for advances and not for superb power.
BTW having some 5 units more than anybody else doesn't guarrantee your victory.
But having an Armor against 10 Legions DOES that.
Oh yeah - the F(O)CC is the best strategy ever!
You build a super city and THEN you get all OTHERS easily!
Pfeeeew - long post isn't it???
